CCDD 120313—Advance Warning

Cool Card Design of the Day
12/3/2013 - This started life as a top-down design. It ended up being a weaker, whiter Remand. I'm not dissatisfied with that, but I am curious how you all would've executed a card about a scout detecting the early movements of an enormous threat.

  1. Hmm. It's clearly "advanced warning," isn't it?

  2. Actually, is this even white? Haven't they said Lapse of Certainty isn't going to be white anymore?

    1. Red, maybe? Then again, I feel Remand should be red, too. "I don't care if it comes back later, I want it gone *now*" feels very red.

    2. I feel in R&D there is much less willingness to put this form of counterspell than we all agree. And I say this because I also feel this spell could be in Red.

  3. How many people are going to misplay this thinking it exiles a creature already OTB?

    1. That's what I thought it was until I saw this comment.

    2. That confusion is Very real, so they tend to be more explicit. Something like:

Counter target creature spell. At the beginning of its controller's next upkeep step, that player may cast it without paying its mana cost.

  4. You could template it to say, "The next time a creature would enter the battlefield, exile it instead.", etc.

  5. Ill give it a shot:

    Advanced Warning 1WW
    Sorcery
Reveal the top 5 cards of target player's library. For each creature card revealed this way, you may untap target creature and put a +1/+1 counter on that creature.

    1. I like the resonance of looking ahead, but the untapping seems so utterly distant from any of the creatures revealed that way. What could we do that would be more relevant to the information of what creatures an opponent has coming?

    2. hmmm how about, "for each creature card revealed this way, put a 2/2 white soldier token with vigilance int play"

  6. Cease-Fire is cleaner, more white, and less feel-bad. Probably could be made into a 1W Uncommon if a set really demanded it.

The flavor isn't an exact match, but if you were making a new card, you could probably call it something like "Forestall".
