Weekend Art Challenge 022715—mad_jojo

Weekend Art Challenge
Greetings, artisans! Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review, if someone volunteers to render the cards.

Modified from the original to remove potentially offensive symbology.
Design a non-permanent card for this art. For extra challenge, make the card's rarity more relevant than it always is.

  1. Great Cleave 1W
    Instant - Uncommon
Target Creature gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the number of cards named Great Cleave in your Graveyard plus 1
If there are 1 or more cards in your Graveyard named Great Cleave, that creature gains First Strike until end of turn. If there are 2 or more, it gains double strike instead.

Not sure about the template of the second half, but I'm erring on the side of fitting it on the card.

    1. I like either half quite a bit, but they could both be viable on their own.

  2. Flying Frog Technique 3R
    Instant - (C)

Target creature you control deals damage equal to its power to another target creature. If there two or more instants in your graveyard, draw a card.

  3. Righteous Strike
    W
    Instant - Common
Reveal the top card of your library. If it is named CARDNAME, target creature gets +7/+7 until end of turn. Otherwise, target creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn.

  4. Opportunistic Strike 2W
    Instant (Uncommon)
Target creature you control deals damage equal to its power to target attacking creature you don't control.
Draw a card for each card named Opportunistic Strike in your graveyard.
"The oppressive Ruiji often miscount villagers. The cunning Kaeru rarely miss opportunities."

I started off designing a card that needed an entire set layout to justify its existence. That seemed like a mistake. Opportunistic Strike was born from its remains. Kill Shot is a perfectly reasonable card in draft. Playing two Kill Shots and netting a card seems reasonable. Placing this at uncommon keeps this from overwhelming a draft since you'd need to be pretty lucky to pick up more than two of them in one draft.

I like the idea of this as a cycle. Still not sure about the end result being card draw.

  5. Ambush Duel G
    Instant (Rare)
The next creature card you cast this turn can be cast as though it had flash. When you cast it, until end of turn, it gains “When this creature enters the battlefield, it fights target creature an opponent controls.”

    Incidentally, screw the Nazis.

    Destroy target creature.

    1. This does not seem like a fun mechanic.

    2. I really like this. Would it resonate better with an increasing effect rather than a cost reduction, though?

    3. The intention behind this is that you want to draft one of them, because it's so good, but a second is dramatically less effective. So you let the other ones wheel to "spread the love" around the table, so to speak.

    4. A couple other options here. Thoughts?

      B)
      Surprise Strike (common)
      4BB
      Instant
      Destroy target creature.
Feat of strength B (You may cast this card for its feat of strength cost. If you do, exile it as it resolves. For the rest of the game, you can't cast spells for their feat of strength costs.)

      C)
      Surprise Strike (common)
      6B
      Instant
      Destroy target creature.
Feat of strength 1B (You may cast this card for its feat of strength cost. If you do, exile it as it resolves. For the rest of the game, you can't cast spells with the same name as this one for their feat of strength costs.)

    5. I like C), but with a BB feat cost to discourage opportunistic splashing.

      Delete
    6. Seems reasonable. Let's add a second B to the mana cost itself to prevent awkwardness.

I like "the first is great, the second is bad" a lot more than "the first is great, and you can't play the second."

      Surprise Strike (common)
      5BB
      Instant
      Destroy target creature.
Feat of strength BB (You may cast this card for its feat of strength cost. If you do, exile it as it resolves. For the rest of the game, you can't cast spells with the same name as this one for their feat of strength costs.)

    7. I like this much better. I'm not sure I find it to be an interesting mechanic, but it isn't obviously broken or unfun.

  7. Wish I had a better template:

    Leap into Action 1W
    Instant (Unc)
Until end of turn target creature gains first strike and "whenever this creature deals combat damage to a creature, it deals that much damage to each other attacking or blocking creature your opponents control."

The added rarity effect here is that while it's powerful, this is also easy to play around, but it'll get to be better more often because playing around an uncommon is a riskier proposition than a common.

  9. Knockout Blow R
    Sorcery (c)
CARDNAME deals 2 damage to target creature. That creature can’t block this turn.
Whenever you cast a spell, CARDNAME gains the name of that spell until end of turn. (This works from any zone.)

    2. What kind of set would this work in? I'm fairly sure this can't be common even in an apt set, complexity is way too high.

      Delete
    3. You play it in your deck like normal. Then, when you Kindle/Life Burst/Rune Snag, it gives you a helping hand. No counters to check, no states or layers, just a synergy that'll come up if you need it.

    4. If the renders haven't been done yet, I'm totally fine with compromising to have this at uncommon.

  10. Mighty Leap GW
    Instant (C)
Target creature gains +2/+2, first strike and trample until end of turn.
Abduct (discard a card named CARDNAME: change the target of CARDNAME. Any player may activate this ability. Only activate this ability while CARDNAME is on the stack.)

An efficient combat trick that carries a possibility of getting blown out. The chance of getting 'abducted' depends on the rarity (in this case, it's high).

    1. I think this card looks a lot worse than it will play. Players hate drawback mechanics, but unless this set is heavy multicolor, the odds of two people being in the same two-color combination and drafting one copy each of the same card are slim to none. So you're adding a lot of words (and stack-mentioning at common) for very little change in gameplay.

Also, Mighty Leap is already a card name.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the feedback. I should probably double-check my card names.
      REVISED VERSION
      Courageous Leap {2}
Target creature gains +2/+2, first strike and trample until end of turn.
Redirect (discard a card named CARDNAME: change the target of CARDNAME. Any player may activate this ability. Only activate this ability while CARDNAME is on the stack.)

While the colorless cost isn't flavorful, it's most interesting gameplay-wise.

2W: Put a creature card from your hand into play blocking target attacking creature you don't control. Return your creature to your hand at the beginning of the next end step.

I'm not sure if the rarity really matter "more" here, but I like this as a build around me uncommon rather than a rare.

    5. Curse Your Inevitable Betrayal!

    7. Leap Frog Defense is a permanent that lets you play and replay creatures for defense (and ETB triggers) only. While 7 mana is unwieldy to pay to get your first benefit, the idea of making a Primeval Titan and/or Thragtusk every turn makes it seem worthwhile. Or would, if it didn't just mean "your opponent can't attack until you're tapped out or she can alpha strike regardless."

  12. Strike of the Student. {W}

    Instant

Target creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn. Then count the number of other cards named Strike of the Student in your graveyard. If it is one or more, untap it and it gains first strike until end of turn. If it is two or more, It gains double strike until end of turn. If it is three or more, it gains indestructible until end of turn and may block any number of creatures this turn.

  13. Sectarian Ambush
    1R
    Instant
Target creature deals damage equal to its power to another target creature controlled by the same player.

I see there's several similar designs already, but this twist is what occurred to me with the art. To me it looked like an ambush by someone in the same army, but significantly different to the victim. I considered something about creature type, but decided "controlled by the same player" was simpler and the art could carry the flavour equally well without mechanical support.

I didn't try for the bonus this week :)

I've always thought it strange red didn't get more "Fall of the Hammer" (deal damage equal to power) instants, it seems a natural twist on direct damage. This is a twist on that idea, keying off opponent's creatures instead of yours which is a lot better if you're behind, but means you can't build a deck around it.

Im nit sure what the cost should be

    1. The details need to be set before you can nail down the final cost.

      A) The next time a creature you control would deal damage to an opponent, you may redirect that damage to a creature that player controls.

      B) until end of turn whenever a source you control would deal damage to an opponent, you may redirect any amount of that damage to any number of target creatures and/or players.

A is very narrow and would be cheaper. B is overly broad and would need to cost quite a bit.

      1) how many things do you want to redirect damage from?
      2) damage from your creatures only or "sources"?
      3) can you split the damage among multiple other targets?
      4) should the other targets be controlled by that player.

I like this as a red and white card. It could be a hybrid red and white card depending on how broad it ends up being. :)

You may draft CARDNAME face up. If you do all other players must draft their card face up this pick. Note any creatures revealed this way.
You may have target creature you control fight another target creature. If that creature is one of those revealed when you drafted CARDNAME, your creature becomes indestructible and gains deathtoutch until end of turn.

Until end of turn, for each creature target player controls, you may have that creature become any creature type you want. It stops being the other thing. Seriously. Go crazy. Even Squirrels.
Raring to go — You may reveal the top card of your library. If it shares a rarity with CARDNAME, you may target any number of players instead. If you do, put the revealed card on the bottom of your library.

      Anurid Ambush. 1G

Put a 2/2 green frog samurai creature token with reach and bushido 1 onto the battlefield blocking target unblocked attacking creature an opponent controls.

      Delete
    2. I reeeally dislike the "premium foil" clause. It cares about things that Magic cards in principle shouldn't care about, and people who use foil cards generally aren't interested in power level in this way anyway. Also, the non-premium version of this is the most underpowered card ever.

      Delete
    3. Also... I like Anurid Ambush a lot. Though it probably wants to cost 2G at least.

  19. Ignoring the rarity bonus:

    Prefecture Infighting (UNC)
    Conspiracy
Hidden Cabal (Start the game with this conspiracy face down in the command zone and secretly name two cards. You may turn this conspiracy face up any time and reveal the chosen names.)
Creatures you control with the chosen names get +1/+0.
Creatures you don’t control with the chosen names get -1/-0.

Conspiracies aren’t permanents, right? Like embllems, planes, and schemes, you can’t put them into play or destroy them with Vindicate.

Hidden Cabal is new keyword that ask you to name two spells rsther than Hidden Agenda’s one. I think that in the context of a draft set it can allow for some fun deisgns and play interaction.

  20. Unlikely Companion 2U

Put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of target creature you control, except that it has no abilities, its base toughness is equal to that creature's power, and its base power is equal to that creature's toughness.

Rarity is relevant in that it wouldn't be "Unlikely" if it were common. :-)

    1. I don't think copying the name and creature type are important enough to the flavor of the card to make it this complex - I would prefer a simpler template that is 99% functionally identical:

I streamlined and corrected templatings when I was able.
Wobbles submitted the enchantment first, then the scheme; I rendered both.
Czynski's Strike of the Student didn't have rarity indicated, I left common, but it could have been uncommon by sheer wordiness. Idk.
jack's Sectarian Ambush didn't have rarity indicated, I left common by my instinct.
I added foil effect to Mike George's Glimmer of a Chance by my personal initiative.
I also made two designs, one jokey in silver border, and one black. Feel free to review whichever you deem more interesting - or both :)
