CCDD 091316—Diffracting Pool

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/13/2016 - The opposite of Reflecting Pool is nearly as broken. Or more. It really depends on your deck.

  1. This always allows you to tap for any (but not all) of the five colors, right?

    1. On turn 1, anything. If you play a Badlands turn two, it taps for bant. If you play a City of Brass, it only taps for colorless.

    2. Right - so as long as you have a Diffracting Pool out, any combination of lands you have will always produce WUBRG. I do admit still tapping for colorless with City of Brass or all five basics out is neat, though.

    3. Yes, at least one of your lands can produce any one mana.

    4. I like that in theory, but would it be possible to make it just always (or never) tap for <>, and tap for any colour no other land could produce?

I totally missed "type" and it just seems asking for players to be confused. It is defined in the rules (and includes colour and colourless, but not other variants like snow), but I had to look it up.

    5. That's probably best: What happens when you have other lands that can produce each color and {C}?

  2. What happens if you have two of them?

    1. It breaks. Good observation.
The fix is to replace "other lands" with "lands not named CARDNAME."

  3. Ooh, interesting idea. I agree, it's probably not a good idea to print it, but I don't know for sure.

In fact, now I wonder about cards somewhere between city of brass and the "tapped if you control two or fewer other lands" cycle. Like, a land that produces any colour, or two or three colours, on the first few turns, but colourless thereafter. That helps aggressive decks get started, but doesn't help splashes. Is that a space worth having?

  4. Diffracting Pool
    Land (U)
T: Add <> to your mana pool.
1: Add one mana to you mana pool of any color except the color that was used to activate this ability. Only mana produced by basic lands may be spent to activate this ability.

T: Add <> to your mana pool.
Basic lands you control have "T: Add one mana of any color you mana pool"
