A pet project of many amateur (and professional) designers is to ruminate on what Alpha would look like if it were being designed today for the first time. It's definitely a fun exercise, but honestly, if you look at the cards in Alpha, so many of them are just so near perfect. They legitimately set the game up to last over 25 years, and the quality shows.

CCDD 032216—Dwarven tribal through synergies not subtypes
Cool Card Design of the Day3/22/2016 - I was reading Sam Stod's article about designing tribal for Shadows over Innistrad and thinking about how making a tribe work together through effects that name its subtype is so different from giving all those cards mechanical synergy. Without spelling it out for players, you're giving them a very intuitive archetype that will play well, but isn't chained to the subtype.
So I decided to grab an under-respresented tribe and try this new strategy out. Here follow 21 new cards.

CCDD 091014—Meadhome Guardian
Cool Card Design of the Day9/10/2014 - Was thinking how Goblins are the most common tribe to get tribal mechanics in any given set, and wanted to explore a way to turn that on its head. Meadhome Guardian could be {2}{W} and even common, depending on the set.
