Weekend Art Challenge 040116—Drake-Elf-Demon Synergy

Weekend Art Challenge
Hello Artisans! Anastase here. Remember this challenge?

Well we are going to do something similar this week, only trying the opposite:

You will have to design a card that synergizes if played alongside the previous card an Artisan suggested.

Each submission will use the next image in the queue, in order to generate a cycle of cards that each synergizes with the previous one: the drake synergies with the elf, the demon synergies with the drake, the elf synergies with the demon, the drake synergies with the elf...

I suggest making an "I'm next" comment immediately to claim your place in the chain if you want to avoid being scooped. Just don't be a jerk and wait an hour after doing so. Post your core idea asap so the next person can start, and then iterate from there.

Restrictions:
  • The cards have to be creatures.
  • The order of the images has to be respected (drake, demon, elf)
  • The new card has to be of a different rarity than the previous card.
  • You cannot reply to a design you submitted save for updating that submission due to feedback. You cannot modify it to the point where the answer submitted after you has to change, however!
  • You can use each image only once (so maximum three cards designed by each person).
  • In case of simultaneous submissions, the one that is higher up in the comments section is the valid one.
drake by randis
demon by Cloister
elf by sheppardarts
I will try to give feedback on your submissions over the weekend. Each Artisan is allowed one submission, but can update it as many times as needed. Please state the rarity of the card you submit. If you have a creative-commons art that better fits your card, please include a link to it and I will render the card with that art.

Good crafting, Artisans!

  1. Keen-Eye Overseer - 2U
Creature - Drake Scout - Uncommon
    Flying.
Green creatures cards in your hand with power 2 or less have flash.

I didn´t know if the synergy has to be two sided (i mean sinergy with a possible demon) but i wanted to do a simple card. I will apreciate suggestions.

    1. Lol, i miss the fact that i should have done a demon sinergy drake, not an elf sinergy drake. In my mind the cycle was drake-demon-elf-drake etc... So, if i could remake this it would say:

      Night-Path Drake - 2U
      Creature - Drake Uncommon
Flying. When @ deals combat damage to a player, black creatures with flying cost 1 less to cast this turn.
      2/2

    2. No no. You were right to begin with, and we fixed the challenge around you. Drakes should synergize with elves.

As for two-way or not… IDK?

    3. The synergy has to be with the previous card.

    4. As such you imagined a green elf costing less than 2, and did create a synergistic card. It could be part of a cycle of uncommons that help define 2-color decks, but I could also have seen it without the restriction to green.

    5. Yes, i think that depends of the enivoment set. Could this be non-green attached?

      Keen-Eye Overseer - 2U
Creature - Drake Scout - Uncommon
      Flying.
Creatures cards in your hand with power 2 or less have flash.
      2/1

      Would this be acceptable?

  2. Dark Lord of Armies {4}{B}
    Creature-Demon (rare)
Whenever ~ or another creature ETB under your control, creatures you control get +1/+0 until EOT.
At the beginning of your end step, lose 1 life for each untapped creature you control.

    1. My immediate gut reaction is "4B? Really? Shouldn't demons call for double-black at least?"

Aside from that, I like the card a lot. Casting Thatcher Revolt with this in play would be quite a beating. The drawback kind of feels symmetrical to the benefit, but without being, you know, *fair* or anything. It would be really unfortunate to cast this into a stalled board in Limited, but in any other scenario it'll cost maybe 1 life per turn on average.

    2. This synergises with the flash aspect of green creatures of the drake?

    3. Exactly. And with evasion creatures.
4B so you have a hope of casting it in GUB deck. Or a rb deck. Arguably justified by lack of flying.

  3. Archery Commander
    3R
    Creature - Elf Archer
    2/2
When CARDNAME ETBs, you may tap it and any number of other untapped creatures you control. It deals damage equal to the total combined power to target creature.

    1. Nice! A clean, resonant design. It comes close to being strictly worse than Flametongue Kavu, but that's not really a bad place to be, power-wise. :-) My main concern is that this design with the Elf art is a bit jarring... I'm not really getting "red" or "ETB removal effect" or "use me with other creatures" from it.

      What rarity?

      Delete
    2. Also it synergises with the previous design by allowing you not to worry about the damage you get fro having untapped creatures?

  4. Cloudpath Drake 2WU
    Creature- Drake (Rare)
    2/3
    Flying
Whenever CARDNAME attacks and isn't blocked, you may exile another target creature you control, then return that creature to the battlefield tapped and attacking.

    1. Actually... to 2/2 with Flying and Vigilance, to better synergize with the Archery Commander.

    2. I already synergised quite well by having the ETB creature re-ETB.

  5. Tainted Protector 2BB
    Creature - Demon Cleric (U)
    Defender
Whenever an attacking creature you control dies, defending player loses 2 life.

    1. Again, an ETB creature synergises very well with a blinker.

      Delete
    2. Huh? This doesn't have an ETB ability. The synergy is blink-tapped-and-attacking plus large creature that can't attack on its own.

    3. Gah. I am all over the place today, misread to a crazy degree. Ignore the previous comment. And this is AMAZING. I had not thought of that.

    4. Not seeing the synergy with Cloudparh, but this is a sweet card.

      Delete
    5. The protector has defender. The drake makes it blink into play attacking.

    1. Cornered Elf-2G
      Creature-Elf Archer-Common
Whenever CARDNAME blocks or becomes blocked by a creature with flying, CARDNAME gets +2/+0 until end of turn.
Sacrafice CARDNAME: CARDNAME deals two damage to each creature with flying.

      Delete
    2. I'd say uncommon at least. Zero-mana sacrifice abilities add a lot of power and board complexity, especially if it's a sweeper ability like this one.

      P/T?

      Delete
    3. True, true. Seeing as how the challenge calls for the cards not to have the same rarity as the ones below or above, then how about I "pimp" it out a little bit and make it a rare.

      Cornered Archer-2G
      Creature-Elf Archer-Rare
      First Strike, Reach
Whenever CARDNAME blocks or becomes blocked by a creature with flying, CARDNAME gets +4/+0 until end of turn.
Sacrafice CARDNAME: CARDNAME deals two damage to each creature with flying.
      1/2

  7. Drakaroo 4U
    Creature - Drake (u)
    Flying
When Drakaroo dies, draw a card and put a 1/1 blue Drake creature token with flying and “When this creature dies, draw a card” onto the battlefield.
    2/2

    1. It is a strange synergy however: you sac your rare to kill your own flyer to get to draw one card?

      Delete
    2. Though if you had four of these out, you could sac your archer to get four tokens and FOUR cards! Now that's some efficient synergy.

  8. Connoisseur Demon 3BBB
    Creature - Demon (R)
    5/5
{T}, Sacrifice a non-token creature: Creatures you control get +2/+2 UEOT. If it had flying, creatures you control gain flying UEOT. The same is true of first strike, double strike, haste, menace, and trample.

    1. Oooooooooooooh! I like the way you shifted this from white to black :)

  9. Warning Scout {G}{G}
    Creature-Elf (unc)
    Reach
Whenever a creature you control dies the first time each turn, add {G}{G} to your mana pool and put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.
    1/3

  10. Drake Queen 2UU
    Creature - Drake (Rare)
    Flying
    2/2
{2}: If you control fewer drake tokens than non-token drakes, put a 2/2 blue drake creature token OTB. Use this ability only once each turn and only any time you could cast a sorcery.

  11. Demon of Infinite Power- 4BU
    Creature- Demon Wizard- Mythic
BBUU: Target player draws four cards and loses four life.
