Investigate is basically a delayed scry with an artifact body. It is a cool mechanic that I do not think will be evergreen, but I expect to see more of in the future.
This week I would like you to design cards that either investigate, reward investigation or play well with clues.
Here are the images you can choose from:

Artisans are encouraged to comment on each other's design in order to help design a more cohesive ensemble of cards.
Good crafting, artisans!
My exploration file for this currently holds 5 unique card names and 11 different executions.
ReplyDeleteWill wait to see where others go so I don't step on their toes.

Artifact Creature-Mercenary (unc)
Whenever a player investigates, except the first time each turn, he or she puts a +1/+1 counter on CARDNAME and gains control of it.
It follows the data.
3/3
Potential multiple mind controls per turn at uncommon? It's not even that many hoops to jump through. What if it just cared about doing it the second time each turn instead of N-1?
DeleteIf you can investigate twice on my turn after I do, is it really unfair that me investigating a third time should win me the creature back? Given that most turns it'll just be one player taking it, why limit it?
DeleteDidn't realize it was an effect enjoyed by both players. I'm not sure how that impacts my evaluation just yet.

ReplyDeleteCreature - Human Cleric
At the beginning of each end step, if you drew a card other than the first card you draw in each of your draw steps, draw a card and lose 1 life.
"Too much power? No wonder you are so weak if you believe in such things!"
1/1
If you drew more than one card this turn?

2, Sacrifice CARDNAME: Draw a card.
At the beginning of each end step, if you investigated two or more times this turn, you may return CARDNAME from your graveyard to the battlefield.
Actually, should work better as "each upkeep" and "last turn" so it can't be sacrificed twice in the same turn.
DeleteI'm a fan. Very jenny
DeleteI have several:
ReplyDeleteArt #2
Alas, Poor Yorick 3BB
Instant
Destroy target creature. Investigate twice.
or
I knew him well 1B
Instant
Play ~ only when a creature dies.
Investigate twice.
I prefer the second. Templating: you may only cast ~ if a creature died this turn.
DeleteNo Stone Unturned XB
ReplyDeleteInstant (R)
As an additional cost to cast No Stone Unturned, exile X creature cards from your graveyard.
Investigate X times.
Art #2
Riffing:
DeleteNo stone unturned B
Sorcery R
As an additional cost to cast ~, sacrifice any number of clues. You lose 1 life and draw a card for each clue sacrificed this way.

ReplyDeleteGreat Insight XU
As an additional cost to cast ~, sacrifice X clues.
Draw twice X cards.
I feel like its a better fit with art 2, but I like it
DeleteGrim Cloak (1)
ReplyDeleteArtifact -- Equipment
Equipped creature gets +1/-1.
Whenever equipped creature dies, Investigate twice.

I could've changed the costs (and maybe if this was black...?), but the skullclamp parity was too good to pass up.
sorry, When*
Deletealso: for art #2, naturally
Strangely enough, in an affinity deck, possibly more broken than skullclamp.

Artifact creature - advisor construct - R
3UU: investigate
Sacrifice a clue: draw a card.

Conspiracy (c)
(Start the game with this conspiracy face up in the command zone)
At the beginning of the first upkeep, investigate.
Each of investigator's abilities are neat, but I dislike that pairing them on a single card reduces them automatically to 3UU: draw a card.
DeleteYeah, the card's designed for a vacuum. If clues becomes deciduous or are used heavily, I could do it at uncommon without activated investigations.

ReplyDeleteAfter working with any advice I get on the card, it will be destined for TumbledMTG, my custom constructed format.

Not bad from a Mel perspective (although pretty aggressively costed?), but Vorthos wants to find the thematic link between the kicker and kicked effect.

ReplyDeleteCreature - Human Advisor
Whenever you draw a card, if you control an artifact, draw that card and then scry 2.

(art #1)
Divination just got a lot more complicated.
DeleteShe Who Shall Return 2B
ReplyDeleteCreature - Zombie Wizard (Mythic)
Lifelink
Whenever you sacrifice a permanent while She Who Shall Return is in your graveyard, put a +1/+1 counter on She Who Shall Return. Then, if its power is 5 or greater, you may return it to the battlefield, tapped and with the +1/+1 counters remaining on it.
2/2
Might have to be "Then, if there are 3+ counters on ti, you may return it…" but this is pretty cool, mechanically and thematically.
DeleteSo sorry Chah! You probably submitted between the moment I sent the things to Jay and when he posted it! I fear that at 2B only it is very strong. I would make it legendary so as to not abuse it from the graveyard. Or I would remove the lifelink in favor of deathtoutch.
