Weekend (art) Challenge 052016 - Music

Hey Artisans! I'll be doing a non-art challenge this week.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to design a card inspired by a song lyric, or even a piece of music. Genre does not matter to me, as long as you can link to the music on YouTube.

Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give it throughout the weekend. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review. I'll do the renders this week.

Final submissions are due by 1PM Monday Afternoon Pacific Time.
Bonus points if you include a link to some art for the card.
Extra bonus points if you create a mechanic, named or not, thematically linked to dreaming or the creative process.

  1. To start things off, because these kinds of challenges are a little trickier to find the seed of inspiration:

Exile all creatures, then return each of those cards to the battlefield tapped under its owner's control.

    1. Do you guys like 2ww without etbt better? It's a better design but less flavorful.

Take an extra turn after this one.
Skip the combat phase of this turn and that one.

I imagine this will be rightly shot down, but... it's really just an Explore stapled onto an Early Harvest you can't stockpile, right?

    1. There are definitely some decent applications for this, but it's unquestionably a blue card.

Cast ~ only during your first main phase. Take an additional turn after this one. Skip your next two combat phases.

You drive me crazy with that boogieoogieoogieoogieoogieoogieoogieoogie.

    1. Nice. I'm not a fan of the tension of having a discard outlet only after you hit delirium though.

Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt this turn. You may waylay a creature for each bard you control. (Exile it, it gains {2}: return this card from exile to your hand)

"But the bard's song will remain."

As a sidenote I sent the review from the previous WAC to Jay slightly late, so he could not upload them (same for this week's challenge), but I am glad to be able to participate this week.

    1. I like the design, and the reference works, but I am worried about memory issues and about the fiddling it requires; transforming back and forth every turn seems annoying to do, especially in multiples.

    1. Seems like this might lead to really repetitive gameplay which might not be that enjoyable?

Imprint — At the beginning of your upkeep, you may reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a land card. If you do, exile it, then put other revealed cards on the bottom of your library in any order.
Gates of Prophecies has all activated abilities of land exiled by it.

I wanted to evoke the feeling of exploration and discovery from the song, not any particular lyric. Feedback, as always, appreciated.

    1. I'll on the fence as to whether this is rare or mythic, but either way that's a really cool design

    2. I might say in a random order in order to keep Belcher from using one copy of this as a "stack your deck for free" - otherwise, cool design!

      Delete
    3. Right. Random is the correct wording. I wonder how many seemingly innocent cards the Belcher has changed.

    Enchant two creatures

If one of the enchanted creatures would die, the other enchanted creature's controller may sacrifice it. If they do, the surviving creature is indestructible this turn. Otherwise, the dying creature's controller gains control of the other enchanted creature.

~ enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each other creature you control.
When ~ dies, destroy all creatures.

Inspired by Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley. There is a possible image at the start of https://adventurousaesthetics.com/tag/ozymandias/ which also includes the full text of the poem. An example performance is at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncxR5JKLVA8

There are settings to music, but none felt right to me. If that disqualifies the entry, never mind, I didn't have time to find an original song I had an idea for.

To give you an idea, extracts from the poem:

Two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert
Nothing beside remains. "Look on my works, ye Mighty and despair!"

Creatures that enter the battlefield under your control this turn gain indestructible.
Flavor Text: "On the darkest of days, you saved my life"
    Song: "Brave Shine" - Aimer
I have no idea what would be a good art for this, but it's the opening theme to the anime series Fate/Stay Night
