  1. This version may end up having better gameplay, but I'd like to try this as a {2}{U} instant that Griptides if it was played this turn for some classic blue mage "gotcha."

    1. I would want to try several variations. It might send to library if the creature is tapped, or if it's not enchanted, or if you cast another spell this turn… Not married to this version at all.

    2. Nice variations.
Out of those, an instant version with "if it entered the battlefield this turn, put it on the top of its controller's library instead" and a sorcery with "If it was tapped, put it on the top of its controller's library instead" sound especially interesting to me.

  2. Happy new year!

It's interesting, to me making a top down "Break the Ice" card would definately be red.

    Maybe,

    Break the Ice 1R
    Instant (U)
Break the Ice can't be countered by spells or abilities.
Choose one- Deal 2 damage to target creature, or deal 2 damage to each creature with hexproof.

    or maybe

    Break the Ice 2R
    Sorcery (C)
Deal 4 damage to target player. If Break the Ice is the first spell played this game, Break the Ice deals 7 damage instead.

    Have a great 2014!

    1. Looking at this card now, I have no idea how I justified the pairing of this flavor and mechanics. Not seeing it at all.

I like getting around hexproof with general damage, but naming hexproof is weird to me.

The second Break the Ice is pretty sweet. I wonder if that condition could exist on a cycle or what.

    2. Yeah, something like "Banish Under Ice" might make more sense.

    3. Proscribing that a card should be played on a particular turn doesn't make it strategically interesting or open up ways to use it. But I'm sure there must be certain interesting effects that can only be allowed if there is a restriction like that. I guess the Leylines are one example. It might be worth examining more varieties and their uses.

  3. Break the Ice 1U
    Enchantment - Aura (u)
    Enchant permanent
When a creature enters the battlefield, return enchanted permanent to the top of its owner's library.

    1. "When a permanent that shares a type with it ETB under the same controller…"
