CCDD 022516—Jury-Rig

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/23/2016 - Inspired by Devin's initial Spotlight Challenge submission, I wanted to find a mechanic that combined unearth with a way to get your artifact into the graveyard, like cycling. That led me to something similar to dash.

CCDD 090115—Goblin Meditator

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/1/2015 - Theory: Everyone who sees this card will have a very strong guess what it does.

CCDD 100914—Call to Battle

Cool Card Design of the Day
10/9/2014 - Call to Battle is meant to be another stab at the bottom-dollar haste-granting spell. This implementation tries to run double-duty as a red mana ritual. Take a look.

CCDD 020513—Mountain Giant

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/5/2013 - While reading MaRo's Boros article, I was thinking about how great haste is at enabling battalion, and how terrible battalion is at granting haste. What if your creature could attack the turn you cast it, but only if you attack with two or more other creatures?

CCDD 010913—Mogg Rally Chief

Cool Card Design of the Day
1/9/2013 - Relentless Assault is a rare but classic effect. Red loves attacking so why not let it do more every once in a while.

Aurelia is the latest Assault on a stick (which is a very small list) and got me thinking about other possibilities for creatures that give you extra combat steps. The biggest concern is the potential power any repeatable effect can grant, so I wanted to make a creature that grants you just one extra attack. Then I thought about that literally:

CCDD 122112—Panic Elemental

Cool Card Design of the Day
12/21/2012 - I didn't design this for today, nor even consciously select it for today, but it does seem appropriate for the day the world was supposed to end.

CCDD 040412—Kettle Clanger

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/4/2012 - There's a neat poetry in the difference between Goblin Chariot and Goblin Shortcutter. They're both 2-power goblins that do something the turn you cast them. Something that screws up your opponent's blocking plans. One attacks a turn early and the other let's your team attack unhindered. That symmetry is neat and gives each card a unique identity.

But you know what, sometimes art is smashing two similar things together to see what you get:

CCDD 080411—Dark Riders

Cool Card Design of the Day
8/4/2011 - I'm in Indianapolis today for GenCon, so I prepared this installment early. If you're there, come and say hi. If not, maybe next time. Either way, wish me luck: I'm pitching a couple non-Magic related boardgame designs to publishers for the first time.

Back to today's card. Haste is secondary in black, meaning that it sports the keyword from time to time but never at a significant level. Dark Riders, while better than Hill Giant or, uh, Scavenging Scarab (yikes), is no less appropriate or fair a card than Crypt Ripper.

CCDD 031211—Assault Goblin

Cool Card Design of the Day
3/12/2011 - Everyone loves 1/1 flying goblins, how about an upgrade? While still weak, Assault Goblin is a bit above the curve we've seen for common flying in red before. That might make it uncommon, but I think with the modern creature standard, this could make the cut.
