CCDD 042513—The Boss's Son, Infiltrate & Inside Job

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/25/2013 - The world doesn't need a lot of Sleeper Agents. It doesn't. But if it did

<wavy lines dream sequence>

Where the rarities are dependent upon the context—the theoretical set these live in that should probably never see print.

  1. The Boss's Son: Seems like a very small payoff for the number of hoops you have to jump through to get it to work. I have to cast a 3 CMC card, get it onto my opponent's half of the board, and *then* kill it - all to deal 3 damage to my opponent?

    Infiltrate is a fun Johnny tool, probably at rare, and quite an elegant design. There is already an existing card called Infiltrate.

    Inside Job is cute, but would be far more interesting if it didn't have a built-in hoser for itself. In any deck built around abusing "own but don't control" effects, the correct answer is "yes, you can have your creature back." It also would be more natural (and interactive) for the damage it deals to be based off power rather than CMC.

    1. Yeah, I was torn on whether to add the last clause to Inside Job. I chose to for thematic reasons, not mechanical ones: Who keeps double agents after they've betrayed you?

      3UBR
      Sorcery
      Target creature you don't control deals damage equal to its power to its controller. Then gain control of that creature.

    3. Nice.

      Inside Job {X}{U}{B}{R}
      Sorcery (rare)
      Target creature with mana cost X deals damage equal to its power to its controller. Then gain control of that creature.

  2. Double Agent B
    Creature-Rogue U
    Double Agent can't be blocked except by other rogues.
    Whenever Double Agent deals damage to an opponent, that player gains control of it.

    I'm also looking forward to seeing if anyone pairs Treacherous Pit-fiend with the Golgari maze runner. It's a perfect combination, and Pit-fiend is super fun.

    It's just hard to top Jinxed Choker. Best Sleeper Agent ever.
