Gatecrash Art Challenge 5 — Christine Chou

Today we're covering Christine Chou's art work.

In completely arbitrary order:

B. This ability is terrifying, but I could see Wizards putting that text on a card. That card would definitely be black-white, though.

C. Corrupting Influence is clever, but imperfect. You can enchant an enemy land or artifact and give its controller the choice of either losing that permanent or suffering 1+ life loss each turn. The problem being that land and artifacts are rarely the most important cards in the Limited games where this would see play, and so it's basically always correct to sacrifice it. Which gives black artifact-removal. You can alternately enchant your own land or artifact, which set you up for a(n unlikely) two-for-one, but will give you an extra extort outlet at the cost of 1 life per turn. I would use this rules text:
Enchant Land
Extort
At the beginning of enchanted land's controller’s upkeep, he or she may sacrifice it.

B. Get the pun? Took me a while. Indestructible is strong, but Wizards isn't too shy to slap it onto rares anymore. Remove the deathtouch (and the accidental linebreak I added) and this card becomes pure and impressive.

B. I also thought this looked like equipment. My execution is a lot less exciting and interesting, but I think very printable and appropriate to the art.

B. This effect fits the art and the cost feels right. Sewer Insurgence would surely be an uncommon since you don't want to have a critical mass of repeatable land destruction effects even at six mana. Put this on a 1/1 unblockable guy and it'll lock your opponent out of the game in <6 turns.

C. I also thought this could be a land. This is a Mystifying Maze type card to help control decks survive to the end game. We have to be careful with effects like these though, because they make games go longer and contribute to stalemates.

A. Awesome. Flawless. Want.

A. Love it. Self-combos are fun when they support a set theme. I wonder if this could cost 3.

  1. If Deciding Point loses deathtouch then it is Shield of Kaldra.

Shrine of Generosity has a subtle but serious problem: the Angel creature it becomes does not have flying.

  2. Corrupting influence could cost 3. I think it's interesting as a balanced way to have pseudo land destruction at that cost.

  3. Here's the rest of cards for the coming days;

    Image 9:
    Heroic Effort 4WW
    Instant (U)
Untap target creature you control. It gets +6/+6 and gets first strike until end of turn.

    Image 8:
    Lead Astray U
    Instant (U)
You choose whether target creature attacks or blocks this turn. You choose how that creature blocks (make these choices before other blockers are declared and assigned if it’s your turn).

    Image 14:
    Blot Out 5BB
    Sorcery (R)
Destroy all creatures. Your opponents each lose life and discard cards equal to the number of creatures destroyed this way.
"The dark secret of the Orzhov was so decorated with finery that few grasped it before it was too late."

    Image 10:
    Sudden Thunder 2R
    Instant (U)
Sudden Thunder deals 2 damage to target creature or player and 1 damage to another target creature or player.
'“Why would I need flints when I have fingertips?” -Ral Zarek'

    Image 12:
    Thought Thirst 3UB
    Sorcery (C)
Target opponent discards a card and you draw a card.
Cipher (Then you may exile this spell card encoded on a creature you control. Whenever that creature deals combat damage to a player, its controller may cast a copy of the encoded card without paying its mana cost.)

    Image 15:
    Orzhov High Inquisitor 3WB
    Creature - Knight (R)
Extort (Whenever you cast a spell, you may pay W/B. If you do, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain that much life.)
Other creatures you control have extort (multiple instances of extort each trigger seperately).
    4/4

    Image 13:
    Simic Luminary 3UG
    Creature - Human Wizard (U)
Whenever Simic Luminary enters the battlefield, deals combat damage to a player, or dies, draw a card.
