CCDD 030420 - Painful Psychosis
There are only so many effects that scale naturally with "pay X life", like Toxic Deluge and Fire Covenant. I think I found one that Magic hasn't done yet.Wednesday, November 14, 2018
CCDD 111418—learn a lesson
Cool Card Design of the DayDuring the weeks between learning I'd made the top 100 for GDS3 and the initial design test, I designed and playtested a Magic world and a number of potential mechanics for it, knowing that work would either be directly relevant or at least good practice. One of the keywords I tested had been stewing in my head for quite some time.

CCDD 091117—Fueled by Pain
Cool Card Design of the Day9/15/2017 - The impetus of this design was to punish your opponent for hurting you and reward you for playing into black's masochism.

CCDD 041217—Pisonic Intrusion & Nightmare Made Real
Cool Card Design of the Day4/12/2017 - Here are a couple cards to help support mixing mill and damage as a strategy.

CCDD 040617—transfuse
Cool Card Design of the Day4/6/2017 - Today's mechanic is a blend of repurpose and bloodpact: Rather than discard a card to upgrade a static effect according to the CMC of what you discard, you can pay a variable amount of life.

CCDD 032917—Bloodpact
Cool Card Design of the Day3/29/2017 - Here's a keyword for suicide black and dead guy red. These colors care more about hurting their enemy than themselves, so they're happy to pay a few life to make their creatures more aggressive.

CCDD 010417—Mad Whispers
Cool Card Design of the Day1/4/2017 - Mad Whispers means you never have to choose whether to draw cards yourself or ding your opponent for 2 life with Sign in Blood. Symmetry!

CCDD 031416—Toil
Cool Card Design of the Day2/20/2016 - Toil is inspired by Clue tokens. Not nearly as versatile, but potentially worthwhile thanks to its own vector of relevance.

CCDD 040814—Pain Song
Cool Card Design of the Day4/8/2014 - Pain Song is a much-less proactive Sanguimancy. Instead of asking you to build up a small army, this asks you to lose life. My preferred version is the sorcery, which appeals to Johnny because he's got to figure out how to lose life on his own turn, perhaps by playing it after Sanguimancy.

CCDD 010214—Purge Thought
Cool Card Design of the Day1/2/2014 - How the hell is it Thursday, already?

CCDD 042613—Blood Vial
Cool Card Design of the Day4/26/2013 - If you played Magic when the original Mirrodin was out, or if you bought Archenemy, you should recognize Sun Droplet. This is an adorable card that casual players really like because it effectively gives you, the player, regeneration. I certainly have fond memories or knowing that if I can just stall long enough, I will heal any amount of damage you send my way.
Blood Vial plays in a very similar space, but in a darker way…

CCDD 081511—Entwine with the Arcane
Cool Card Design of the Day
8/15/2011 - Today's card is a sort of Lich meets Necropotence. Or perhaps more of a Phyrexian Arena as life choice. The name is terrible because it uses two existing mechanic words and has nothing to do with either of them, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with the card. Okay, one aspect of the wording is pretty clunky, but other than that... oh just look at the card already!
