The other inspiration for this card was my musings on skeleton tribal, a creature type I love very much. (Also recommended watching: Every skeleton in Magic, ranked.) Skeletons have a strong thematic component in regeneration/graveyard recursion, but it's close to zombie tribal and there just aren't a lot of them. Skeletrex attempts to compromise on the second issue by encouraging you to assemble your own Bone Brigade with reanimation effects.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot...he carries a club made of lava! DAMN YOU SKELETREX!!!
I am also a huge fan of Skeletons! Shame we probably won't be seeing many of them, if at all, nowadays.
ReplyDeleteI agree they have a rough identity crisis - them and Wraiths, now that Swampwalk is out.
Finding ways to do recursion that don't step on the toes of Zombies is tough. I personally like either Tenacious Dead or Sanitarium Skeleton as being their "things".
