CCDD 032220 - A Little Something Extra

Combat tricks are a bad value proposition in many ways. They aren't consistently worth a card, they're vulnerable to instant-speed removal, and so on. What's more, they aren't even all that tricky. Because they cost mana they're at least somewhat telegraphed, and easy to play around once they're suspected. What would it take to work around that problem? Here's one idea.

CCDD 090518 - Ghostfireball

This is something I came across in my file while working on something else, and I don't think I ever posted it.

Cool Card Design of the Day
7/6/2017 - Getting to copy your opponent's kill spell seems like a more fun twist on the kind of spell protection Glyph Keeper offers.

Weekend Art Challenge Review 012916—Colorless

Weekend Art Challenge Review
I must start this week, as always, by thanking you all for your participation. Unfortunately this week I had to grapple with windows 10 and MSE, and as such I was unable to do the renders on time. Thankfully Jay came to my rescue.

So this week's challenge was to try and differentiate between colorless and generic mana. It is a hard task, one on which wizards has not given us enough information.

Weekend Art Challenge 012916—Colorless

Weekend Art Challenge
Greetings, artisans! Anastase here, bringing another guest WAC. Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review.

Based on the work of Ipaulsen during his spotlight challenge, I came to wonder about the differentiation between generic ({1}) and colorless ({C}) mana. Therefore this week I suggest we dig in that design space!

CCDD 010716—Augment

Cool Card Design of the Day
1/20/2016 - The new existence of {C} got me thinking about forged again. I started mocking up some cards and found the same problem kicker has: If you don't have the extra/right mana when you cast the spell, the best mode is forever lost. If only there were some way to attain the same flavor, but let players get the bonus whenever their colorless mana shows up. Monstrosity was that tech.

CCDD 101415—An alternative to devoid

Cool Card Design of the Day
10/14/2015 - I'm not convinced devoid was a mistake. Even so, it's an engaging challenge to find alternative solutions to the problem: Make a bunch of colorless creatures without breaking down the segregation of playable cards the color pie offers.

Zeffrikar Exploratory Design Part 3: A Lack of Color Here

There are a few more mechanical areas that we need to explore before we start selecting keywords for the final count. Today I'm tackling some land mechanics for the set to dabble in, and taking a look at the needs and wants of the inscrutable Eldrazi.

CCDD 101714—Prototype & Blueprint

Cool Card Design of the Day
10/7/2014 - Two alternative keywords for a single idea. They could go on colored permanents, but make more thematic sense on artifacts and are more relevant on colorless cards. Basically the opposite of invent.

CCDD 040813—Colorless Frontier

Cool Card Design of the Day
4/8/2013 - What if we use the colorless-matters idea from Ekkremes for Frontier? Most Westerns are set in desert areas where life is hard not just for the people, but for everything. What if that were because there's not as much rich mana around? Explore with me.
