CCDD 022211 — Replacement Body

Cool Card Design of the Day

Every day, I design a new card and discuss it briefly. Sometimes I will examine new possibilities for colors or mechanics, sometimes I'll re-examine existing executions and sometimes I'll just design something I think is neat.

Replacement Body
2/22/2011 - Replacement Body is essentially Gilded Drake with some new clothes. It's meant to be another fixed version of Mind Control where the fix is giving your opponent a 3/3. Costing it the same as Mind Control also allows us to remove the "or sacrifice" clause from the Drake, which makes for a cleaner card and also let's you play it as a Giant Octopus when your opponent is sans-creature.

I would be remiss not to mention the third card Replacement Body might remind you of, Spawnbroker. That's a cool, fun card but perhaps a bit too balanced. There aren't as many instances in which you'll be happy to trade your guy for his smaller guy as you might imagine. A big part of the charm of "steal anything" and "copy anything" effects is precisely that they aren't limited in what they can affect.

Replacement Body secretly has the same problem. You can take anything you want, but you have to give your opponent a 3/3 in exchange, so you really want to be trading it for a Titan or something and you definitely don't want to be trading it for some vanilla bear. That said, you might be inclined to make its ability a 'may' effect so that you can always play it for yourself if the opponent only has terrible creatures. Options are nice, but you can't offer the player every option they can think of: In this case, the fun of Replacement Body is taking your opponent's best guy and it's actually more interesting if you don't give the option not to trade because now you have to calculate the risk of putting it in your deck.

CCDDs prior to 2/21/11 are archived on the Wizards Wiki.

  1. Keep "May" off. Keeps sacrifice outlets open in response to the trigger.
