CCDD 092816—Dismantle Magic
Cool Card Design of the Day
9/28/2016 - Countermagic week continues. The vast majority of counters let you pay less than your opponent to counter their spell. Spell Blast costs more. That's a good thing, but it's so much worse than other options, who would consider it (except against a deck with important 0- or 1-cc spells)?
Is this not fair?

CCDD 092716—Challenge Expertise
Cool Card Design of the Day
9/27/2016 - Countermagic week continues. Challenge Expertise counters any spell you don't have a full playset of, or else acts like a blue Cranial Extraction to prevent further castings of the spell. Top-down from the name.

Tesla: Come into Play - Playtest, Prerelease, and the Future of Tesla
Hi everybody. This weekend, something big happened: Kaladesh came out! That doesn't mean our project is over, though we're certainly nearing the end. This week, I'm going to discuss what it means for the future of our project, and also compare my experiences with the prerelease and with playtesting Tesla.

CCDD 092616—Exceed Your Grasp
Cool Card Design of the Day
9/26/2016 - Its countermagic week on Goblin Artisans. Cancel/Counterspell are such clean and effective cards, but are they fun for both players? It's nice when there's a cat and mouse game where either you're playing around a specific kind of counter, or you've got a counter that you need to optimize based on your opponent's deck/plays.

Greetings, Artisans! Go ahead and click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though if there's any ambiguity as to what your final submission is, I'll make my best guess when doing the renders.

CCDD 092316—Ceaseless Assault
Cool Card Design of the Day
9/23/2016 - When this thought occurred to me two nights ago, I thought it was apropos of nothing but raid, but having just written up yesterday's dedicate, it's clearly related. It's sort of "raid goes hellbent."

CCDD 092216—Dedicate
Cool Card Design of the Day
9/22/2016 - Inspired by yesterday's discussion of rebound, I wondered about a version that you can cast every turn, provided you're willing to pay for it. As soon as you choose to save your mana for something else, the option to keep re-casting it ends.

Cool Card Design of the Day
9/21/2016 - So this isn't a very green effect (though no bleedier than Survival Cache), but it's clean and simple and fits green's meditative nature.

CCDD 091916—Eternal Torment
Cool Card Design of the Day
9/19/2016 - In Limited, the ability to shuffle a card into your deck after you've used it can be a big deal. I tried to make a mechanic out of this and it was awful. One good rare, though, maybe even a cycle…

CCDD 091516—Elusive
Cool Card Design of the Day
9/15/2016 - Revisiting the first CCDD posted to this site. I'm still attracted to cards that can help players get real games of Magic, in this case by smoothing out their opening hand. Elusive (originally gamecycling) gives you more chances to draw the cards you need in the early game, by helping you save the cards you want in the late game until later.

CCDD 091216—Modular Cockatrice and friends
Cool Card Design of the Day
9/12/2016 - 'Modular' is the wrong word because it already means something in Magic. Ignore that. (Although these do play well with modular creatures.)
The concept applies though. Well, okay, the normal English version of the concept does; the Magic meaning is also already taken and means something else (although this is a somewhat modular mechanic).
I'm not helping. It's a weird mechanic, so I'll just show you. Then we'll talk.

CCDD 090816--Slime Whelp
Cool Card Design of the Day
9/8/2016 - Today for Ooze Week, Slime Whelp asks you to feed it creatures from your deck, and it's up to you how many cards to gamble to make that happen. If you can feed it four times (or Titanic Growth it), it becomes a dragon. Flying in green?! Yeah. When you work for it through creatures.
