CCDD 012914—Search the Catacombs
Cool Card Design of the Day
1/29/2014 - This design needs some work, but I like the core idea that it's a self-contained dungeon dive. Who knows what treasures you'll find and what monsters you'll unleash? I'm not sure it should be black, and I have very little idea how much it should cost. Thoughts?

Cool Card Design of the Day
1/28/2014 - I mocked Forest Giant up about a year ago. IIRC, it came about when we were discussing giants that wield trees as clubs, but I love that it's a reasonable card to play in Limited both with and without forests. Not nearly as strong as Kird Ape, but strong enough (again, for Limited).

Assault the Boggart Warrens: An MtG Challenge Deck
I'm going to let you all in on a secret: I don't play nearly as much Magic as I wish I could.
I used to. I had two roommates who were down for games whenever, but nowadays I have a family and more demands on my time. I try to make it out to a Tuesday Night Draft when I can, but the fact is I enjoy casual-constructed formats a lot more (EDH, Planechase, and kitchen table decks). It doesn't matter that I rarely get a chance to play them. I still routinely build decks and tweak them.

1/23/2014 - In his article today, Jacob Van Lunen wrote "Being able to interact with the opponent's board on the same turn we clear out his or her hand is almost always going to result in victory." I didn't want to mess with "Discard X and sacrifice X" but I did want to explore in the space of potentially killing cards in play as well as in hand.

CCDD 011514—Hunter's Grapple & Track with the Tribe
Cool Card Design of the Day
1/15/2014 - I had to stop myself from making a single card out of these to Prey Upon variants. The original idea was Hunter's Grapple, that tapping the creature that's fighting seems like a reasonable cost. But when I first made that, I needed a way to make the card better and found the art for Track with the Tribe which led to the idea of a group hunt as seen on that card. Fortunately I realized at the last moment that tapping didn't help the group flavor and vice-versa, so I broke them apart.

CCDD 011414—Incant, Predict, Ritual & Sow

1/14/2014 - Suspend is a neat mechanic. Trading mana for time is really interesting and many of the best suspend cards really play that choice up, and even add suspense to what will happen when/if they resolve.
Trouble is, writing out what's relatively easy to describe results in a whole lot of awkward rules text. That we need counters to track our progress isn't exactly a bonus, either. If you simplify it to suspend 1, you can clean it up a lot. Here are three different executions that started from that idea.

1/8/2014 - This was the first idea I had for last weekend's art challenge, but it just didn't fit the art at all. For a brief while, the second ability put the card on top of your library, but I didn't want to be able to recur the same creature turn after turn. This is a more challenging puzzle.

The New Card Frame
Yesterday, Aaron Forsythe presented a new card frame that will be used on all Magic cards from M15 going forward. I tend to be a bigger supporter of change than the average Magic Twitterer. (The only thing I didn't love about the M10 rules changes was the way deathtouch worked—and they changed that to match my suggestion soon enough.) I'm mostly a fan of this change too.
