I like giving the ability an obvious purpose (fighting -1/-1 counters) and then letting Johnny discover that it works really well if you can put +1/+1 counters on it.
I had that same idea. IMO, It would have gone really well in Shadowmoor or Eventide; immunity to wither and double bonuses from Reinforce and the class-tribal lords would make it have lots of potential options.
Strangely enough, many of the proposed templates are *less* confusing when you say "counter" rather than "+1/+1 counter" specifically (which would make your rules text sound like a tautology).
You can also say 'gets an additional +1/+1 for each +1/+1 counter on it', which keeps the clarity, but giving more options for a fairly narrow effect, and saving words, seems fine.
The Natural 1G Legendary Creature- Warrior 2/2 If one or more counters would be placed on CARDNAME, twice as many of those counters are placed on it instead.
Abzan Natural 1G Creature- Warrior (U) 2/2 If one or more +1/+1 counters would be placed on CARDNAME, twice as many of those counters are placed on it instead.

I agree with all of the above except the hydra part. Hydras need to be popular with Timmy. This card is pure Johnny.
