Weekend Design Challenge 080721 - One-Color Planeswalker

Hey Artisans! Click through to see this weekend's design challenge. Your mission is to design a custom Magic card that follows the guidelines. Over the course of the weekend, give feedback to your fellow designers on their designs and incorporate their feedback to iterate on your own. I'll try to offer some feedback of my own starting on Monday.

Wrenn and Seven from the new Innistrad set was just previewed. Take another planeswalker who's had a version with two or more colors and design a new monocolored planeswalker card for that character. For bonus points, pick a character who's also had a monocolor card previously and shift them into a different color (e.g. Ajani into green or red).

Good luck and have fun!

  1. As I was going through the list of multicolor planeswalkers, I came across sorin. And while he is pretty centered in black, some ideas for how to make him white.

    Sorin, lordly visitor || {4} {W}
    Planeswalker — Sorin
    [+1] creatures you control get +1/+1 and lifelink until end of turn
    [-1] until your next turn, whenever a player attacks you or CARDNAME, CARDNAME deals 4 damage to target attacking creature and you gain 4 life
    [-2, -X] exile target non-land permanent with mana value X, then return a creature with mana value X from your graveyard to the battlefield.
    (Starts at 5 loyalty)

    Tbh, the “drain” an attacking creature idea just popped up in my head, and I ran with it.

    The last ability is a rather heavy handed design tho, I wanted the removal/reanimate that sorin can do to an extent, but I wanted it to fit within mono-white; any more efficient and it would be a Black/white effect imo.

    1. This design is really great. Each ability is very vampire-y, and the overall package feels like Sorin. I bet it wouldn't get through very many playtests before the numbers on those effects changed, but I like this as a starting point. Oh, and -2, -X is a very neat idea.

    2. Really like the -1 ability, and the life theme resonates with Sorin.

      Not sure about the ultimate, the -2-X is inventive, but a bit clunky. It also feels a bit too efficient for monowhite, even though monowhite gets to do both effects seperately.

  2. Oko, the Arrogant 2UU
    Legendary Planeswalker - Oko (loyalty 4)
    +2: Target creature loses all abilities and is a blue Faerie creature with flying and base power and toughness 1/1 until end of turn.
    -1: Draw two cards, then put a permanent you control on top of it's owner's library.
    -3: Gain control of target artifact or creature for as long as you control an Oko planeswalker.

    1. I like the interplay between the -1 and -3. The -1 does feel a bit weak on its own (you net a card in exchange for negative tempo if it goes onto your own deck).

      The +2 feels a bit disjointed from the other two abilities, and is only useful on the offensive (to shrink a blocker or get in for 1 evasive damage). Maybe it can create a token or something, so there's interplay with the -1?

    2. I agree with Isao on the +1. It feels like it was meant to be formatted as a “until your next turn…” ability, like a lot of other blue planeswalker effects.

  3. Serra, Shade of Absence - 1{B}{B}

    Legendary Planeswalker - Serra

    +1: Illusion tokens you control gain menace until end of turn.
    0: Create a 2/2 black Illusion creature token with flying and "When this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it".
    -3: You get an emblem with "Illusion tokens you control are 4/4 white Angels with flying and vigilance and lose all other abilities."

    1. Rough draft of a Serra shade. Mythic, obviously.

    2. The -3 is very flavourful, reflecting the return of Serra (or so I assume, not too familiar with Serra's lore).

      The +1 doesn't excite me. It does nothing on its own, and even if you have illusion tokens it's kind of meh, since they already have evasion. On top of that, it no longer does anything after you use the -3.

    3. Fine comments. How about this instead? ;)

  4. Nahiri, Fury of the Roil {1}{R}{R}
    Legendary Planeswalker - Nahiri (Mythic)
    +1] You may sacrifice a land. If you do, exile the top three cards of your library. You play one of them this turn, and you may play an additional land this turn.
    -2] You may discard a card. If you do, ~ deals 4 damage to up to one target creature or planeswalker.
    -6] ~ deals damage equal to the number of land cards in your graveyard to each opponent and each creature and planeswalker they control.
