Hello again Artisans! We're back from hiatus with a fresh weekend design challenge. Your mission is to design a custom Magic card that follows the guidelines. Over the course of the weekend, give feedback to your fellow designers on their designs and incorporate their feedback to iterate on your own. I'll try to offer some feedback of my own starting on Monday.
Your challenge for this week is to design a card with disturb. Make it an uncommon creature and do something to mechanically link the front side with the back side. For bonus points, find a way to suggest that it's from a future Innistrad set rather than the current one.
Good luck and have fun!
FLAVOR: In the future, Innistrad will be pulled into a war between the Avacyn/Sigardian Church and a reformation church movement centered on Liesa. Though, the twist is the reformation in this case is Liesa's followers seeking to literally reform the essences of Liesa's destroyed flight of angels.
ReplyDeleteMartyrs of the Reformation 1W (UNC)
Legendary Creature - Human Cleric 4/4
Defender
When Martyrs of the Reformation blocks, sacrifice it at end of combat.
Disturb 4W, Put a +1/+1 counter on each of five target creatures you control.
///
Gloriana, Echo of Liesa's Host
Legendary Creature - Spirit Angel */4
Flying, trample
Gloriana, Echo of Liesa's Host's power is equal to the total power of other creatures you control.
If Gloriana would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead.
That's quite the flavor! I think of Innistrad as being based on post-Reformation rather than medieval Germany, but the concept still works well and the design is extremely exciting. I wonder about dialing back the cost and/or creature requirement of the disturb ability since it tends to be win-more. (Also, no way is this an uncommon.)
DeleteHearty stag | {2}{G}
ReplyDeleteCreature - Elk
Whenever CARDNAME dies, you gain 2 life
Disturb {4}{B}{B}
//
Deathtouch
Whenever CARDNAME enters or leaves the battlefield, each opponent loses 2 life
If CARDNAME would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead.

Now I'm super-curious what the backside's name and flavor are.
DeleteOff-color disturb is a great call mechanically and a very natural place to take disturb in a future set. I also like how the flavor plays into the green vs black color identity conflict.
