Cool Card Design of the Day
8/20/2014 - Let's play with the new "base power and toughness" terminology. What's that? It's a great way to make a Weakness effect? Imagine that!

The question is, do * and the abilities that define toughness on cards like Tarmogoyf make power/toughness setting a non-option [in NWO] when not paired with "loses all abilities?" The rules don't break, but will players who aren't judges break? Does it even matter if it comes up .01% of the time? Seriously asking.

  1. I'm not certain but I certainly think it's a real possibility. I think the interaction between this and other P/T changing effects would be a lot more intuitive, which might well make them sufficiently NWO-friendly.

But I honestly suspect it's not possible to deduce -- I suspect wizards are wondering this very thing now, but to find out, they probably need to find non-rules-lawyer players and show them and SEE if it's obvious or not...

  2. There's the possibility of moving away from */* with a CDA to 0/0 with "CARDNAME gets +1/+1 for each X" like on Eidolon of Countless Battles. You get different interactions with things like Reveillark, but the interaction with p/t setting is arguably simpler.

    1. As cute as */* is, I honestly think that's a change Magic needs to make.

    2. For experienced players seeing 0/0 is just as much of an indication that there's more going on in the rules text as */*, but I wouldn't be shocked if that weren't the case for new players. Nonetheless, I think you're right.

  3. I think this is fine, but probably uncommon, at least in a core set.

  4. A base 0/0 would be an interesting kill spell. Rather thematic, even, since it wouod be foiled by working together and supporting each other, which is pretty antiblack.

  5. I'd say a far more serious issue for nonadvanced players is the more common interaction with +1/+1 counters. Casting this on the average 0/0 hydra increases the creature's toughness. In fact I had someone do exactly this when they cast a Turn to Frog on my Undergrowth Scavenger just last FNM.

  6. Why not just "When enchanted creature takes damage, destroy it."
