Weekend Art Challenge
Greetings, artisans! This weekend we've got a guest reviewer: Anastase aka fadingshadowsofamemorybeloved created this challenge and will be judging it.
Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review.
Design a card for this image by Julie Dillon.
For bonus points, take into consideration that this card's set still needs:
• a bit of ramp at common.
• a way to answer fliers at uncommon.
Follow the Migration {G}
ReplyDeleteSorcery
Look at the top X cards of your library, where X is the highest power among creatures you control. You may put a land card from among them onto the battlefield, then put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.
Would using scry help trim out the text?
DeleteMaybe, but it would also mean I'd need to push the cost up to ~3 and make the card principally about card filtering rather than ramp or mana fixing.
DeletePlaying with shorter text (and going back and forth between power and quantity):
DeleteFollow the Migration {G}
Sorcery
Reveal cards from the top of your library equal to the number of creatures you control. Put a land card from among them onto the battlefield and the rest into your graveyard.
This would be a very strong graveyard enabler, which is concerning but not necessarily format-warping.
I liked the initial version, I was just wondering if:
DeleteScry X, where X is the highest power among creatures you control, then reveal the top card of your library. If it is a land card, you may put it on the battlefield.
That way you can also cast it without a creature on the battlefield. Otherwise the drawbacks are too many. I like the flavor on the card.
Thought it over, and what I suggested is not that balanced either. It could be if it cared about the lowest power amongst creatures you control.
DeleteAs far as the second version of the card goes I feel it makes you go through enough hoops to justify the mana cost.
hey, I can participate!

Ink Blot Out the Skies {1}{G}
Enchantment (unc)
At the beginning of combat on your opponents' turns, for each creature you control, target creature loses flying until end of turn.
ugh.
This is more on the melvin axis than the vorthos.
DeleteI think that mechanicly it helps protect you (even though it could just give reach to your creatures and have the more or less the same effect most of the time). The difference is quite subtle.
Remember those points are bonus points, it is not a hole filling challenge this week.
These are decent:
DeleteDrab Hallucination 2U
Aura (cmn)
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature can't attack or block unless it was the target of a spell or ability this turn.
Hallucinimbus Cloud 4U
Enchantment (rare)
Creatures get -1/-0 for each enchantment y.ou control.
Probably the aura is best.
Indeed the Drab Hallucination is very good and novel.
DeleteThe Skies Are Full

Enchantment (uncommon)
Whenever a creature with flying enters the battlefield, you may have another target creature with flying fight it.
I really like this :) Best against a swarm of similar-sized fliers, since it will leave the single biggest flier alive, which means it doesn't really answer bomb fliers. All it really does is make the opponent choose not to cast their second 3/2 flier. But that's fine for an uncommon. Great flavour as well :)
DeleteIndeed this is a very elegant solution, limiting your opponent to either unblanced fliers like fighting drake which will surive the fighting or to a set ammount of fliers.
DeleteFlock of Snakes-2UG
ReplyDeleteInstant-Rare
For each creature attacking you, put a 1/1 green blue snake creature token with flying and deathtouch unto the battlefield.
Flavor Text: Those snakes will come out of nowhere and eat'ya alive.- Corriach.
Are we doing renders? If we are then I'll do them.
I like the flavor and idea, but 2UG might be a bit cheap for a one sided wrath even with the attacking restriction (considering for example Aetherize). Maybe remove the deathtoutch? Or up the price?
DeleteTake off death touch and this becomes really interesting.
DeleteI was comparing it more to Arachnogenesis, but without the Fog effect. I think it's still interesting with deathtouch, cause you have the option of killing the attackers, or save the tokens and attack yourself, which gives the option back to your opponent. To stop the attack or sacrifice their creatures.
DeleteChanges: 2UG to 3UG
Ok! I just finished with the renders.
DeleteBut, I also just finished them. At like one aclock last night.
Delete:( so sorry Zeno!
DeleteStratohydra XGG
ReplyDeleteCreature-Hydra (U)
Reach
Stratohydra enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
0/0
I know there haven't been many nonrare Hydras, but we're bound to go to Hydra World at some point, right?
I dig it
DeleteYes, that is a very interesting solution.
DeleteDevour the Skies (Uncommon)

Sorcery
~ deals two damage to each creature with flying. Tap those creatures.
This is a good silver bullet that deals with a lot of little pesky fliers. Could easily see it as an instant.
