Go Big or Go Home: GDS3 is Here!

As you may have heard, WotC recently announced the Great Designer Search 3.

Are you planning to enter? It has long been a dream of ours that, when GDS3 rolled around, the Goblin Artisans community would crush it and take multiple spots in the Top 8. I can’t wait to see who among our regulars will step up to the challenge.

What sort of content would you like us to post to help you prepare? Jay’s working on a review of the GDS2 multiple choice test. Here are some other ideas:

GDS2 lessons and retrospectives
Set building brainstorming threads
Sample essay questions that we can imagine them asking
Sample multiple choice questions
Rerunning design challenges from GDS2

Please let us know what would be most interesting or helpful!

Also, consider this an open thread for “OMG GDS3” comments etc.

  1. I'm planning to enter! (If WotC didn't lose my form again, that is. I didn't get a confirmation email or anything.)

I'm happy to contribute content; mostly interested in running sample essay / multiple choice / design tests.

Also, question: Anyone know what the rules will be re: our own designs that are already posted online? I'd hope that we'd be able to crib from those, or at least use the same ideas / mechanics... but that might be frowned upon for legal or fairness reasons???

    1. It appears no one has gotten confirmation. Lots of people spammed wotc on twitter about it without reply.

  2. The answers to GDS2 quiz are actually available in the source code of the page, I've edited them out : https://www.reddit.com/r/GDS3/comments/7i7nvr/gds_2_multiple_choice_test_answers/

Since the quiz for GDS1 isn't available without seeing the answers, I've also taken the question out : https://www.reddit.com/r/GDS3/comments/7i7lbz/gds_1_multiple_choice_test_without_answers/

  3. Because I can only ever do things in short bursts at the moment, I'm doing artisans stuff on twitter. I've been posting daily design thought experiments, the kinds of things that might be asked on the initial essay test. Occasionally I offer critique.

  4. It's a lot of work both to prepare and judge, but A Set In Four Cards is one of the best design exercises I know of/have done.

  5. I caught MaRos tweet a few minutes after it was posted. I signed up right away. I'm pretty darn excited about the challenge.

    1. I've also started posting daily card designs on Twitter. Anyone from here who wants to connect to me, give me a tweet so I can follow you, @ebullioscopic.

I am also trying revamp my old, semi-abandoned blog to have a section devoted to game design. If you have experience building a blog. Mainly I'm hoping for a blog where my posts can be organized into different pages based on the type of content. Again, hit me up on Twitter if you can help.

  6. I'm excited.
I'd like to invite everyone who hasn't already introduced themselves to the Goblin Artisans community to do so:

Just added my intro for any new faces (or old faces that I missed) amidst the Goblin Artisans community. :)

    1. I already have a couple hundred cards designed and ready to go! (Happy to put together a best-of list of a few dozen for anyone who wants to offer insights.)
