CCDD 080218—Tale Teller

Cool Card Design of the Day
This idea started as a way for red to mitigate countermagic played against it, but then I saw no reason not to open it up for proactive use.

Because it's currently set up to recur any number of spells in a turn, I couldn't justify that much card advantage and so Tale Teller only puts them on top of your deck. We could increase the cost to warrant card advantage, but then it's much less effective at its original purpose. I think we could make this put a single spell back into your hand; that's got less dream potential but becomes much stronger in the common case.

  1. Very cool. Needs reminder text: (Instant and sorcery spells are put into your graveyard when they resolve, and all spells are put into your graveyard when they are countered)

    1. If ever a card wanted to reference the stack in its reminder text...

  2. This plus two Manamorphose & Grapeshot for the turn 2 kill? Seems a bit dangerous if it’s unbounded. I would have it be “the next time”, I still think there’s enough to dream about with Time Walk effects et al.

    1. Maybe this is fine though, unsure. I just get antsy around potential Storm enablers. Curse you Storm!! :shakes fist:

    2. Hey, this is what I thought of too!

Unsure if am good dev or just evil eternal player.

    3. Sometimes I wonder if we're at a point where storm is so "enabled" in older formats that any new cards that could also be abused by the mechanic isn't really a relevant issue. It's like worrying if you're making the ocean wetter.

    4. I think banning Manamorphose in relevant formats could be enough. Time Walks seem less of an issue unless you can consistently bounce ~, right?

  3. Alternate templating:

    Chief Rememberer R
    Creature Goblin Wizard (U)
    Flash
When Chief Rememberer enters the battlefield, return to the top of your library all cards in your graveyard that were put there from anywhere except the battlefield this turn.
    1/2

  4. Goblin Archivist R
    Creature - Goblin Advisor (r)
    Flash
At the beginning of the end step, if CARDNAME was cast this turn, you may exile any number of spells from your graveyard that went there this turn. If you do, put one of them on top of your library.
    1/2

Loops slow loops for combo or returns a countered spell, but doesn't recur immediately. I'm sure there's a better wording for checking the GY, but I think tripping the effect at the end of the turn keeps a lot of the functionality while rounding off corner cases.

  5. I feel like putting this on a one mana 1/2 is saying "only play this if you want to do something completely illegitimate with it."

    1. Because a one mana 1/2 is such a worthless body/card. The only way this is worth a slot in your deck is if it is part of some game breaking combo.
