CCDD 083018—Dread Shade

Cool Card Design of the Day
This is an older design I found sitting in my file. Not sure how it came to be. I do dig the flavor of it possessing and animating corpses, and how you usually have to pay black mana to do that.

  1. I really like that design. Kind of reminds me of Unliving Psychopath. Could you have it at 0/1 so the mana investment is more mandatory (unless shenanigans)?

  2. I love the idea, but if there any way to word this so it feels closer to an oblivion effect? I think that way it would better convey they way its meant to be physically played.

  3. The exiling clause is a bit wordy. I wonder if it might still convey the same idea if Dread Shade simply stayed tapped until that creature left the battlefield (or something similar to Old Man of the Sea and similar effects).

  4. I think Sage's remains-tapped might read better than the exile, but what if we used:
"T, Exile Dread Shade: Return target creature card with power less than or equal to Dread Shade’s power from your graveyard to the battlefield. If it would leave the battlefield, instead exile it and return Dread Shade to the battlefield."

It requires knowing that the most-recent power is checked, but that's the intuitive use so I think it should grok? I know "exile until" is in vogue, but I often find it opaque in best case scenarios, much less in corner uses.

    1. Players expect cards to work, so I'm not worried about that confusion. Good template.

    2. That templating is a bit cleaner, but it does leave the ability open to blowouts. With the new wording the opponent could exile the target in response and you'd lose the shade.

  5. In lieu of my participation in the comments for the past two weeks please accept this Azorious card as explanation.

    Jury Duty - (Rare)
    WW1
    Enchantment
When Jury Duty enters the battlefield, exile target creature until Jury Duty leaves the battlefield.
1UU: Return Jury Duty to its owner's hand.

    1. That's a lot of jury duty. Welcome back.

    2. Oh, I was still on jury duty when I sent that. It finally ended today and I'm as exhausted as control decks make you feel when you play against them.

  6. Love the ability, but I think wizards has been tending toward token copies instead of the 'if leaves the battlefield, exile it' replacement effect.

T: Exile a creature card with power less than or equal to Dread Shade’s power from your graveyard and create a token that's a copy of that card. Exile ~ until that token leaves the battlefield.
