Seeker of Riddles is usable in more than just Sphinx decks, but it's especially awesome in a dedicated Sphinx deck. I could see this being a cycle, or even multiple cycles. It helps it be a realistically playable card in Limited with explosive potential, and a real promising buildaround for Constructed. EDIT: Thanks to Jenesis, I realized I also forgot to mention that I chose the trigger intentionally, to ensure it could trigger off most any iconic creature! While there are some undercosted Demons, Angels, Dragons, etc... this hits most of the important ones!
While I'm sure the numbers are all out of whack, I'm curious what you all think about the core concept!
The only thing I don't love about this is that it ignores cheaper sphinxes. Maybe just break it into two triggers: one card for cmc 5+, one card for sphinx.
ReplyDeleteOh, and hexproof on a card advantage engine is probably too much. I'd rather just make it a 2/4 or 2/5.
DeleteI like the idea of it triggering once, then once again. Great!
DeleteThis feels like it touches on green's style of card draw a bit too much. Maybe it can trigger on flying creatures instead of CMC?
ReplyDeleteI was reading it as Temur. Yeah.
DeleteOn the flip side, this would make for a pretty nifty mono-green Hydra tribal card (though it does make some Hydras sad, so two triggers?).
DeleteI intended the trigger to work off of any iconic, and hydras don't fly! So that makes it tricky.
DeleteThis doesn't really read blue, and doesn't really read very Sphinx-y either. Of all the qualities Sphinges have, "costs 5 or more" has to be among the least interesting and memorable.
ReplyDeleteNot that I have any better ideas, though. Part of what's cool about Sphinges is they're each memorable in a unique way. That's sort of hard to tribalize. My only thought is something like:
Sphinx's Student - 2U
Creature - Human Wizard
If a blue creature entering the battlefield causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.
1/2
There's probably a better way to word "your Sphinges trigger their abilities twice", but that's the intent.
I apologize, I forgot to explain something very important in the initial post! It was intended to be a repeating refrain in a set, something that connected all the iconics. The one big thing they share is that they are often, well, big creatures!
DeleteI really like your implementation!
