The art and name didn't help much, but the idea is that this thing is tall enough to block flyers but still dangerous to ground troops. If a flying and nonflying creature attack attack together, it can block both.
Not saying it's a great idea, though I do think "can block an additional creature" could be used more, and Spiders seem like a great place for it.

i find the first one unnecesary complicated. It does not give enough flaver to justify this wierd blocking power
