Hello Artisans!
Anastase here!
This week the challenge is unconstrained, except for the image, BUT you can get bonus points (oooooh you know you want them) by trying to hit as many of the constraints in the list!
Bonus points if the card…
1) generates a two color-draft achetype.
2) is uncommon.
3) has less than 3 lines of text.
4) is more than one card type.
5) cares about life gain.
6) causes life loss.
7) does not draw you a card.
8) has extra costs.
9) cares about the top of your library.
10) directly interacts with planeswalkers.
As always each Artisan is allowed one submission that they can update any number of times based on feedback from the community.
Please do not forget to include your card's rarity!
Good crafting!
Summon Behemoth {3}{G}{G}
ReplyDeleteSorcery (unc)
Look at the top card of your library. If it's a creature card, you may put it OTB. If you don't, put it and CARDNAME into your hand. If a Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus, or Serpent ETB this way, return all creatures with less toughness to their owners' hands.
Score 4 for Jay by my count (1279). Tells a very cool story. Not sure I'm buying the Kraken part, though; it feels complex and arbitrary for not much impact, and despite the blueness of sea monsters it's too color-pie-bending for an uncommon.
DeleteProposing an alternate test box:
Look at the top card of your library. If it's a creature card, you may put it onto the battlefield. Otherwise, return CARDNAME to its owner's hand. If the card is a Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus, or Serpent, you may do both.
I don't think we've ever seen mass bounce at nonblue and nonrare.
DeleteThe creature-type rider is effectively a blue kicker.
DeleteI like Ipaulsen's card a lot, but for this art, I'm sticking with my text.
Ooh, I could get #8 if I exile the top card instead of looking at it.
DeletePunishing Flood 4GG
ReplyDeleteInstant (u)
Destroy target noncreature permanent.
Whenever an opponent gains life, you may pay 3 life. If you do, put CARDNAME from the graveyard on the top of your library.
What's the story behind watching life gain?
DeleteScores 6 by my count (256790), assuming that "noncreature permanent" qualifies as directly interacting with planeswalkers. Surprisingly plausible from a flavor perspective. It's a bit jarring to see "Flood" in the name of a non-blue card, though.
DeleteDread Serpent
ReplyDelete2UB (Uncommon)

Menace
~ can't attack unless a card was put into an opponent's graveyard from anywhere this turn.
Cool restriction. Could probably be unblockable with that.
DeleteOops, was aiming for harbour serpent but forgot I had a little bit more leeway at uncommon. Assuming this needs to do some blocking but also come down early enough to attack if you can trigger it, what size should I go for? 4 mana 4/4, or 3/5 or even 5/5?? 5 mana?
DeleteI count 3 bonuses here (127). I like the fit with the art, too-- seems very resonant.
DeleteCrushing Wave 2UB
ReplyDeleteTribal Sorcery - Serpent (U)
As an additional cost to cast Crushing Wave, reveal a Serpent from your hand.
Each player puts cards from the top of his or her library into his or her graveyard equal to the revealed card’s converted mana cost. Crushing Wave deals damage to each opponent equal to the total power of Serpent cards put into your graveyard this way.
It took a lot of finagling, but I hit 8/10!
Ok, I love serpent tribal, bit but maybe this needs to relax the challenge a little to be playable. If it was a creature with a serpent friendly abilitu might it play better?
DeleteEight was great. I think ten is impossible with "three lines or less" :)
Pfft, tribal.
DeleteIs this black? Seems more red.
Especially since it could easily deal 0.
Not going for a lot, but I got this idea fast and liked it.
ReplyDeleteThassa's Serpent {4}{U}{B}
Enchantment Creature - Serpent (R)
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player returns a creature he or she controls to its owner's hand, then that player discards a card.
6/6
Sunken Hopes + Necrogen Mists + Vizzerdrix. Fun stuff.
Unfortunately, on a card that is five lines of text, not three.
DeleteThat's pretty sweet.
DeleteI think I've got all 10?
ReplyDeleteHearty Faering 2WU
Artifact Creature - Human Vessel (u)
U: If you gained life this turn, put CARDNAME on the top of its owner's library.
“They tell of a boat that survived every wave, no matter how swift, or strong, or wide. They tell of a crew that never comes to harbor, that sails the Given Seas, n’er to rest.”
— The Salty Almanac
4/3
7 by my count (1234579), which is still impressive. I suppose the other 3 are matters of interpretation, but I assumed that "being a creature" was not enough to satisfy 6 or 10.
DeleteRestrictions may breed creativity, but in this case I'm not loving the ability-- feels a bit like trinket text and doesn't connect great mechanically.
TIL that "faering" 1) is an actual word and 2) has nothing to do with fairy rings or seafaring.
Delete"Human Vessel" is a weird creature type. I suppose Pirate Ship is a Human Pirate, but that's because they removed the Ship creature type altogether.
Could the flavor text justify the lifegain portion more?
Less weird:
DeleteWhenever you gain life, you may put CARDNAME on top of its owner's library.
Wurmcoil Behemoth {5}{WP}{BP}
ReplyDeleteArtifact Creature- Wurm (Uncommon)
5/5
Play with the top card of your library revealed. You may play that card as long as you've gained life this turn.
Scores 8 by my count (12345679).
Cool. Why white? Why black? (Why Phyrexian mana?)
DeleteDark Tides
ReplyDelete2UB
Sorcery - Uncommon
Return target creature or Planeswalker to its owner's hand. It's controller loses life equal to its converted mana cost.
Going back and forth whether to cost it at 1UB or 2UB.
Also pretend I used the right "its" :(
DeleteNice!
Delete4cc seems better.
Swift-Water Temple
ReplyDeleteEnchantment Land - U
Swift-Water Temple enters the battlefield tapped.
Play with the top card of your library revelead.
T: Add C to your mana pool. If the top card of your library is a land card, add to your mana pool one aditional mana of any type that land could produce.
I don´t think this is too good. Could it enter to the battlefield untapped? The ongoing effect make me think it could be an enchantment.
