CCDD 100417—Sword Cabinet

Cool Card Design of the Day
10/4/2017 - This card might be a bad idea because of memory issues, but the equipment version of Primal Clay is cute, at least.

Compared to Primal Clay, Sword Cabinet is simpler on its own, but adding it to an existing creature is a bit of work, and choosing another mode when you move it around is much harder to track. Wizards also hasn't printed any cards in this vein since M13 because of those memory issues, so exacerbating them seems like a misstep.

Thinking about it, the simpler solution is almost certainly to simply make the choice each turn:

  1. Mobile Armory 1
    Artifact
At the beginning of combat you may pay 2. If you do target creature you control gets +2/+0, +1/+1 or +0/+2 until the end of turn.

On of the confusions of having this as equipment is if I can change the mode but paying the equip cost again. Not sure how you'd want that to work.

    1. The first version grants a static bonus, so moving it would clearly move the bonus. The second one grants a bonus until EOT, but only at the start of combat, so again, moving the equipment should clearly have no effect.

You can't equip a creature with equipment that's already attached to it, though that isn't universally understood, so some players might think you can choose a different bonus by paying the equip cost. That's why I made the second version.

  2. Swordmaster's Arsenal 2
    Artifact - Equipment
At the beginning of combat, equipped creature gets +2/+0, vigilance, or first strike until end of turn.
    Equip 2

    1. This version addresses Chip's twitter remark: "I wish the different bonuses were more flavorful. That would make them easier to remember."

      Cool.

It also makes me wish I could pay more to get more, for some reason.

      Swordmaster's Arsenal 2
      Artifact - Equipment
At the beginning of combat, choose one. If you pay {2}, choose two. If you pay {4}, choose three:
      • Equipped creature gets +2/+0 until EOT.
      • Equipped creature gains vigilance until EOT.
      • Equipped creature gains first strike until EOT.
      Equip 2

But that's hella wordy. And flavor weird too.

    2. (art: a longsword, a rapier, and a cutlass arrayed invitingly)

      Duelist's Arsenal 2
      Artifact - Equipment
At the beginning of combat, choose one —
      • Equipped creature gets +2/+0 until EOT.
      • Equipped creature gains vigilance until EOT.
      • Equipped creature gains first strike until EOT.
      Equip 2

(art: a three-armed clearly artificial creature wearing a foppish feathered hat)

      Triskel Fencer {3}
      Creature - Construct Soldier
The first time on your turn you would choose one, choose up to three instead.
      2/3

    3. That fencer is way better in a deck full of charms, but I still love the idea.

  3. fencer's foil 3

    Artifact equipment

    equip 1

if ~ is tapped equiped creature gets +0/+3, otherwise equiped creature gets +3/+0.

0: tap ~, activate this ability only any time you could play a sorcery.

    Or the uncard

    Pointy Protractor 3

    Artifact equipment

    equip 1

equiped creature gets +X/+Y, where X is the angle ~ makes with the horizontal in degrees/30 and Y is the angle ~ make with the vertical in degrees/30.

    0: 1/3 tap ~

      Artifact—Equipment
      Equipped creature gets +3/+0.
{T}: Equipped creature gets -3/+3 until ~ untaps.
      Equip {1}

  4. I like it. Although I feel this should be flavoured as one of those weapons that morph.

Sword cabinet should be something where you can pay multiple times to give a small bonus to multiple creatures :)

    1. Good flavor point. Pasteur's "Swordmaster's Arsenal" is much better.

What do you mean by weapons that morph?

    2. Thanks. Like, a sword that can take the form of a staff, or warhammer, or rapier or whatever suits the wielder. It seemed the obvious flavour for this "equipment that gives a varied bonus".

    3. Ahh. I was thinking:

      Spider Sword 2
      Equipment
      Morph G
      Equipped creature gets +2/+2.
When ~ unmorphs, equip it to target creature you control.
      Equip 3.

  5. Sword Cabinet
    1
    Artifact - Uncommon
~ enters the battlefield with 3 +1/+1 counters on it.
T: Move a +1/+1 counter from ~ to target creature without a +1/+1 counter on it.

    1. I'd either put a mana cost of {1} on that ability or restrict it to sorcery speed, but yeah.

    2. Yeah sorcery speed is a good call. I toyed with how to make this give a variable bonus for hours and ultimately gave up and posted the vanilla version. The concept is hard!

      Another possible take:

      Weapon Cabinet
      1W
      Sorcery - Rare
Search your library for up to one card named Bonesplitter, up to one card named Leonin Scimitar and up to one card named Iron Shield. Put all cards found this way into your hand. Shuffle your library afterwards.

      Iron Shield
      1
      Artifact - Equipment - Common
      Equipped creature gets +0/+2.
      Equip 1

    3. Nice.
"Do I put Iron Shield in my deck? It's pure value if I Cabinet it, but what if I draw it?"

  6. Playing around in this space led me here:

    Battlemaster's Standard 2
    Artifact - Equipment
At the beginning of combat on your turn, choose one —
    • Equipped creature gets +2/+2 until EOT.
    • Attach CARDNAME to target creature.

    1. Neat. I think?
Kind of want to grant +3/+0 and trample instead, to give more reason to re-attach.
