CCDD 020316—Ambitious Wolf & Regal Beaver

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/3/2016 - Here are two creature keywords that reward enhancing your creatures.

Potential doesn't care how you enhance your creature, but only cares when you enhance its power. Regal doesn't care what you enhance about your creature, but requires auras or equipment. Potential can't buff a creature's power (because then it would fuel itself) and regal can't flicker your creature (because then it would unattach and turn itself off). Which is better clearly depends on the set looking for such a mechanic.

  1. Potential doesn't work because layers. Ability adding is in layer layer 6, +1/+1 counters and p/t switch is at the end. You can do triggered abilities that give vigilance until end of turn based on power but you can't statically give and remove vigilance based on power.

    1. There's got to be a way to design layers so these things are possible. Alright:

Potential—Whenever ~ attacks, if its power is greater than its base power, untap it.

    2. The alternative to this layers system is all timestamps, all the time. I think that's clearly worse, because it relies on unrecorded information about which permanents have been on the battlefield longest.

    3. If one layer is dependent on a later layer, its evaluation is deferred until all the normal layers have been executed. If more than one is deferred, those layers are executed in the same order in the deferred cycle.

  2. "Regal Beaver" is an awesome name. And I really want to see the set where "Beaver" is a supported creature type.

As for Regal itself, I suppose the "you control" restriction is for flavor reasons? I don't see how growing bigger with a Pacifism or Pin to the Earth attached would cause any balance issues.

    1. If we want to promote auras, that means not nerfing attack-auras. Also flavor.
