Greetings, Artisans! Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review, if someone volunteers to render the cards.
Design a mythic card for this art.

Flying, haste
Whenever CARDNAME deals combat damage to a player, exile that many cards from the top of your library. You may cast them this turn.

Sweet. I want to jam 4 of these in a deck full of cantrips and bounce spells.
DeleteIs it too greedy to want prowess on this too? (Probably with that cost/stats ratio)

ReplyDeleteLord Indra
Planeswalker - Indra
[+2] Put the top two cards of your library into your graveyard. Put any lands revealed this way onto the battlefield.
[-2] Deal 3 damage to target creature or player.
[-5] Create a legendary 5/5 avatar creature token with trample, indestructible and reach.
[4]
Looking up the original image description, apparently before the brahma/vishnu/shiva trio became prominent Lord Indra used to be considered god of rain, thunder, war, civilisation, and some other stuff, and maybe considered king of the gods. I tried to capture the feel of "god of good stuff/thunder" with the first two abilities, and the feel of a personal warrior with the last one.
I've been away for a while. Where did the "create" terminology originate from? Add that to the list with dies and fight...
DeleteThe +1 is cool. It initially threw me off because I'd expect that text on a mono-green or "golgari" card.
The -2 is a little strong for standard but it is exciting! I'm still on board.
The ultimate feels wrong somehow. I can't put my finger on it. Did you have any other options in mind?
Is it because the + is ramp/graveyard, the - is control/reach, and the ult is a beater? What deck would need that particular combination?
DeleteCreate will be in the Kaladesh update. It was accidentally spoiled early.
DeleteI'm a little worried how easy it is to get to the ultimate, especially because it's indestructible. I'm also not sure why a red/green deck is trying to mill itself. What if nonlands went to bottom of library instead?
Minor nitpick, but ever since the "Kiora Atua" debacle there's no way a name like this would make it out of playtesting.
The middle ability is also exactly Ral Zarek's -2, so should probably be changed
Delete@R Stech: I'm not sure it has to he changed. I mean, they haven't repeated yet, but there will come a time when the design space becomes so well explored that they'll have to. Maybe just tweak the cost by one, but I don't think it's that crucial.

At the beginning of your upkeep, return two instants or sorceries from your graveyard to your hand.
4/4
The idea is that it is a late game way to bury your opponent in card advantage/damage.
DeleteAlso provides a strong incentive to draft a UR Prowess deck.
I like this effect, but I think you could push it even more to really earn that mythic status. Something like:
Delete"Whenever CARDNAME deals combat damage to a player, you may return up to that many instant or sorcery cards from your graveyard to your hand"
Y u no prowess? :(
DeleteUnleash the Tempest 2RR
ReplyDeleteSorcery (M)
Until end of turn, whenever you tap a land for mana, that land deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
What if this was "whenever you spend mana" instead, or even "whenever you cast a spell, deal 3 x converted mana cost"? I think that'd feel a lot cooler than just being able to tap out for damage.
DeleteIt's a super koth emblem until end of turn.
DeleteI like droqen's suggestion. That could be boiled down to "until end of turn, instant and sorcery spells you own have "this card deals 3 damage to target creature or player."
I mean - this can divide damage up but is essentially:
DeleteX2RR
Sorcery
Deal 3 times X damage to target creature or player.
...which is pretty splashy/mythic in and of itself.
Technically it's more like
DeleteX2RR sorcery
Deals XXX damage. Add X to your mana pool of the same colors and types spent to pay X.
None of those reward you for untapping your lands :)

Whenever ~ would be dealt damage, that damage is dealt to you instead.
Whenever ~ would deal damage, draw that many cards and that damage is dealt to target creature or player instead.
5/1
Does the second ability accidentally set up an infinite feedback loop? Maybe tie it specifically to combat damage just in case?
Delete3CD, 5 power, 20-ish toughness is very strong. 3CD draw five is super good. Together, these numbers need a little finesse to not be broken.
Needs "if" instead of "whenever." I don't see the reason for the damage redirection ability. It doesn't work because a replacement effect can't target and it seems too good anyhow; drawing 5 cards for 5 mana is already more efficient than just about every one-shot card draw spell in the game.
DeleteWhat if I just dropped him to 3/1?
Delete5 was definitely pushing it, you're both right...
At 3 he's like... a Bolt + Brilliant Plan. With recursion, but vulnerable to other things.
Replacement effects never infinite loop. I checked! Each only replaces the same effect once (and when an effect is changed it does different things, but is still remembered as the same 'effect'). It's triggers that cause problems.

Such an odd corner case! Good catch. I'll have to remember that.
DeleteThor, God of Thunder 4R
ReplyDeleteLegendary Enchantment Creature- God
4/4
When CARDNAME dies, if it's a creature, you may return it to the battlefield as a noncreature enchantment.
Whenever a red spell or permanent that dealt damage to an opponent this turn is put into your graveyard, you may pay 2R. If you do, return that card to your hand.
Solid, even if a little scary. I know that it's mythic so the word count isn't really an issue, but the second ability kind of reads like an instruction manual (see prized amalgam). There's a whole lot of technical text confusing how sweet the ability is. If you're open to cutting out the parts that reference permanents, though less powerful, it might appear better.
DeleteDo gods have to be enchantments or is that strictly a Theros thing? If not, "If Thor would die and he isn't an enchantment, he becomes an enchantment instead." is an option.
Yeah, I included "permanent" because the flavor's so great with stuff like Ball Lightning. Sticking to just spells would definitely make the templating more friendly. The enchantment change you suggest also makes sense.
DeleteNew verison:
Thor, God of Thunder 4R
Legendary Creature- God

When CARDNAME would die, if it's a creature, it becomes an enchantment instead.
Whenever an instant or sorcery spell you control deals damage to an opponent, you may pay 2R. If you do, return that card from your graveyard to your hand.
Excellent changes. Love the new version.
DeleteThis looks pretty epic.
DeleteQuick templating question, though. Doesn't the game see the spell in question as a separate object after it changes zones (from the stack to the graveyard)? Soulfire Grand Master creates a replacement effect, I believe for that reason.
Voltais, Son of Keranos [R/U][R/U][R/U]
ReplyDeleteLegendary Enchantment Creature- Demi God
If your devotion to red and blue is six or more, Voltais has indestructible.
RU: Voltais deals 1 damage to target creature or player. Scry 1.
3/3
Hi guys, I've been away for a while. It's good to be back though. Here's my first stab
Official change: cut enchantment from type line. Then in the devotion ability, "...six or greater Voltais has indestructible and counts as an enchantment in addition to his other types."
DeleteI think the abilities are flavorful, I just worry about how dominant/oppressive this would be in limited. Granted it's a mythic but it utterly takes over a game while being almost unkillable with one or two additional permanents. Perhaps this could tap when it uses its ability rather than cost UR?
Delete1RU activation?
DeleteThat'd probably do it.
DeleteTydarath, the Endless Eye 3UR
ReplyDeleteLegendary Creature - Avatar (M)
Flying, haste, hexproof
Play with the top card of your library revealed.
Whenever you tap a land for mana, tap all lands you control.
You may cast the top card of your library any time you could cast an instant and must cast it if able.
4/3
So your entire deck is a Judge Tower? This seems way too convoluted to be a really appealing mythic. Does anything suffer if we just nix hexproof and the "must cast it" clause?
DeleteGood point. I was going for a mandatory Future Sight effect, but there's no clean way to do that. This seems mostly equivalent:

At the beginning of your upkeep, exile twice X cards from your library and choose one:
• ~ deals X damage to target creature and X damage to you.
• You gain X life.
• Scry X.
I'll try and get the renders done tonight.
