CCDD 020217—Mourning Stag

Cool Card Design of the Day
2/2/2017 - Here's the back half of Elephant Guide: a 3/3 for {G} that requires a creature to die. The trigger is worded so that you're guaranteed to get your stag even if someone kills your target in response.

What else can you do with that tech?

  1. Very reminiscent of the Hidden enchantments from Urza block. Nice that you can choose individual creatures to mark to be avenged. However the 2-for-1 tech adds more questions than it answers; having to remember several turns later which enchantments were brought back with Replenish and which weren't seems like a nightmare. I'd use "put into a graveyard from the battlefield" and leave it with the classic Aura weakness.

    Fiery Wake
    R
    Enchantment - Aura - C
    Enchant creature
When Fiery Wake is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, deal 3 damage to target creature or player.

    1. Replenish is very rare in Magic games across the board, whereas responding to an aura with removal is quite common. This is a trade I'm happy to make. Especially since I know to keep track when someone does to manage to get Mourning Stag into play without casting it.

    2. Genesis Wave? Sovereigns of Lost Alara? Zur? Granted decks that want this won't want those....

Regardless, do we even want to do this from a game mechanic perspective? I feel pretty strongly that the risk of an Aura is sort of intrinsic to their design, no? What flavor justifies the Aura protecting the creature before the Aura even exists?

Alternate ways to do this without attempting to fundamentally change Aura's intrinsic weakness:

      G
      Instant
If target creature dies this turn, create a 3/3 green Elk Spirit.

      G
      Enchantment
Sacrifice ~: If target creature dies this turn, create a 3/3 green Elk Spirit

    3. Is pollution intrinsic to cars? It's historically been there, but it's not actually necessary, and it's not part of what makes them attractive or unique.

    4. Aura "When ~ is put into the graveyard from the battlefield or the stack, create a 3/3 green elk creature token."

Sorcery "If a creature died this turn, create a 3/3 green elk creature token."

Enchantment "When a creature dies, you may sacrifice this. If you do, create a 3/3 green elk creature token."

I'm not sure. I think it's a problem that auras have the 2-for-1 weakness, but I think special cases that work round it tend to be kind of ugly.

  2. If the enchantment is countered, you still get the Elephant, right?

    1. If you didn't want that, I think you could use the tech you invented here (https://goblinartisans.blogspot.com/2014/10/ccdd-101614inevitable.html):

      G
      Enchantment -- Aura
When enchanted creature or this spell's target dies, create a 3/3/ green Elk Spirit token.

    2. I like this wording much better, fwiw.

    3. I'm not a big fan of the mechanic, but this is what Split Second was made for!
