Design a card for a Kamigawa sequel set.
The Pure Shot R
ReplyDeleteLegendary Enchantment- Aura Title (U)
Enchant Creature
Flash
When The Pure Shot enters the battlefield, it deals 3 damage to target creature or planeswalker.
I like the title, but I can't tell how this legendary aura is functionally distinct from an instant. I guess you can't cast it against a planeswalker unless someone somewhere controls a creature. Maybe the implication is it triggers "whenever you cast a legend" effects elsewhere in the set.
DeleteI like the story here -- My Goblin Piker hurls his spear with precision, dealing 3 damage to a target, and henceforth is known as "Goblin Piker, The Pure Shot." I'm guessing other cards reference creatures that have Titles? Instead of the title type, I wonder if the effect could just be:
DeleteEnchanted creature is Legendary.
When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, enchanted creature deals 3 damage to target creature or planeswalker.
Tama, Peerless Outrider
ReplyDelete2R
Legendary Creature - Human Samurai - Rare
Sensei - Other Legendary creatures you control have "R, T: Deal 1 damage to target creature or player."
R, T: Deal 1 damage to target creature or player.
2/2
Turning legends into slivers is interesting. (Terrible in any block not pushing legends real hard, but maybe workable in Kamigawa.)
DeleteWe wouldn't normally want to turn someone's army into a bunch of utility creatures, but these utility creatures clearly stack. That also makes Tama dangerous, but it's rare and requires you to have other legends both in your deck and OTB. Cool.
Unopposed W
ReplyDeleteInstant - U
Destroy target creature if you control the creature with the highest power.
If you control a creature that has or is tied for the highest power.
DeleteUnopposed doesn't feel white to me, but green or black. Despite the condition, one mana removal that can target anything at instant speed, makes this very very strong. This text does look like a Magic card, though.
DeleteHat's Off to You R
ReplyDeleteSorcery
Sacrifice an equipped creature you control. You may attach an equipment to another creature you control. If you do, it deals damage to target creature or player equal to the sacrificed creature's power.
Funny and weird.
DeleteWhy can I attach any equipment, rather than just the one from the sacrificed creature?
Bushido Bolt 1R
ReplyDeleteInstant (Unc)
~ deals 3 damage to target blocking creature.
Chain 1R (Whenever you cast an instant, you may cast ~ from your graveyard for its chain cost)
The art said something about damage creatures during combat. I thought of a creature that dealt damage when it attacked, possibly based off other attack triggers to be a flanking/bushido lord. But then I got to thinking of possible variants on splice. I don't know if chain is balance-able or not. I aimed to get something like splice but without the exciting-but-rules-problematic "add text to card". And the idea is, keying off other instants, you can only trigger it so many times, and many of the chain cards will be designed for a fairly specific situation (eg. this one, you need to cast when you've already attacked), so you need to cast an instant right then in order to get the benefit.
It makes sense that New Kamigawa would replace arcane, and splice-onto-instants is something MaRo has talked about plenty. Splice-onto-instants-from-the-graveyard is different, adding new appeal, power, and danger. I've messed with something similar and I'm hesitant but optimistic. Exile after re-casting may be necessary, but only playtesting will determine that. I agree that actually grafting text is silly when simply casting your spell is so similar.
DeleteSashika the Deadeye 2WW
ReplyDeleteLegendary Creature - Human Samurai (R)
First Strike, Bushido 1.
1W: Deal 1 damage to target blocking creature.
2/2
This 2/2 for four has _three_ abilities to dissuade blocking, and they all stack. I need a 3/6 to block this successfully on turn 5. Or I can just treat it like an expensive Phantom Warrior. Other than that practical concern, this is really cool.
DeleteNot sure if you missed this, Jay, but it looks to me like Sashika can deal damage to *any* blocking creature, not just creatures blocking Sashika. So you'd want to get rid of it by -- if no other option presents -- blocking it.
DeleteI did miss that. Thanks for pointing that out. That does change things significantly. It makes your whole army dangerous to block. Now it feels like a four-mana rare.
