Scry 3 or draw 2? destroy target or controller sacs two creatures target gets +2/+0 and (vigilance/first strike/flying) or team gets +1/+0? search library for two forests or one land of your choice?
Blue: U - Scry 3 or bounce. Black: 1B - -3/-3 or sacrifice a creature. White: W - Gain 3 or make a 1/1 bird Green: G - Adventurous Impulse or +1/+1 counter.
Red efficient “any target” removal spells are the obvious ones I’ve noticed moving up in rarity. Black with Doom Blade and now Murder was a while ago. White’s O-Ring effects, same. I don’t think I’ve notice any others recently - Green for example still gets all of its fight/punch/Plummet effects at common. Generally speaking, rule of thumb now appears to be if it’s pushed for Constructed, it’s Uncommon. I don’t love it, personally, but it is what it is.
This feels something like a mechanic we would've seen in Nemesis, but I can't shake the feeling that there's something fun for Red to do in this space:
Torches & Pitchforks R Sorcery (u) Flip a coin, then resolve this effect or return this card to its owner's hand: Heads- ~ deals 3 damage to any target. Tails- ~ deals 1 damage to two targets.
Flotsam & Jetsam 3R Sorcery (r) Flip a coin, then resolve this effect or return this card to its owner's hand: Heads- Destroy target land or vehicle. Tails- ~ deals 2 damage to any three targets.
Fun! It also makes the cycle is easy to imagine, so would get players looking for more if opening this in a pack.

Might be harder done than said...

All uncommon, all sorceries.
I imagine based on Lightning Strike and Abrade, this would have to be Uncommon. Neat upgrade to Chandra’s Pyrohelix.
ReplyDeleteIt's fascinating that little old Lightning Strike is uncommon now. Did other removal spells take a hit in the last year?

DeleteI think I might do a deeper dive on this and write up an article about it.
DeleteMaybe just doing 3 damage divided between up to three targets? To keep it at common maybe then the cost could go up to {2}{R}.
DeleteYeah, I think that after New NWO you can see a trend in that most common removal is costed at 4 mana or more.

DeleteSo, Arc Lightning reprint? :)

I like that you can pay at another chance on your preferred effect. The cheap one might be too useful just as "R: Return this spell to your hand."
