4/15/2014 - Fiery Reflection is a Shock with a Reverberate added on. Or, it's a Reverberate with a Shock added on. The best part is that you can always choose to copy itself for two Shocks when there are no better targets.
Since this has to be rare, I wanted to be more aggressive with the cost, but {1}{R}{R} seems absurd for such a flexible and effective spell and {R}{R}{R} might be too restrictive.
Cool!
ReplyDeletePersonally I'd prefer if blue and red split up Forking and Shunting instead of overlapping in both, but while that's the case I wonder what the blue version of this looks like.
Unsummon?
Twiddle?
I get that the cast trigger is meant to get around the spells-can't-target-themselves restriction, but is this losing elegance in its attempt to gain flexibility?

Instant
Copy target instant or sorcery spell. It gains "This spell does 2 damage to target creature or player." You may choose new targets for the copy.
Better. Might have to be:
DeleteCopy target instant or sorcery spell. Add "This spell deals 2 damage to target creature or player" to it. You may choose new targets for the copy.
Either version would require some interesting rule wrangling to account for what happens to a spell with undefined targets (since that is now a possibility), and to allow the text "choose new targets" to add additional targets to a spell (which is currently very much not possible).
DeleteI'm thinking that "you may choose new targets" totally fixes adding targeting text to a spell with or without natural targets.
DeleteHow is this different then having Fiery Reflection do the 2 damage?
DeleteThis is brilliant. I'd love to see a whole cycle of these get printed (e.g. Giant Growth, get a 1/1 token, Unsummon, Raven's Crime) if that doesn't break the color pie. The added utility against counterspells is also nice and (I think) good for the game. My one reservation is that it's not at all obvious that the spell can copy itself.
ReplyDeleteWhat percentage of players would read and understand this card? I get that we designers are allowed the occasional Perplexing Chimera, but this seems like a strange place to use it.
ReplyDeleteI definitely admit there is a certain aesthetic pleasure in what this does, but I can't help but feel there is a more grokkable implementation around the right corner.
Apart from Evan's?
DeleteThe templating needs work (as people have suggested) but it's a good idea.
