Cool Card Design of the Day
8/23/2016 - Larger flash creatures have to be expensive because of their potential card advantage. Giving a creature reach at instant speed is much cheaper, because it relies on you having a creature available to block. Drachnid Widow skirts the line, letting you block a small flier by itself, or a large one if you've got something bigger already.
I think this is a little too efficient and wrecking both Grizzly Bears and Wind Drakes, especially at common. If turn two I play a Bronze Sable, and my opponent plays a Forest (onto their Plains, say) and passes, do I want the correct play to be for me to not attack? That seems awful, and when my opponent does attack into my Widow and I get a two for one on the second or third turn, the game is already tending towards a landslide.
ReplyDelete[Do note: This is not at all the same as attacking into Gideon's Reproach mana, where my opponent can get at most a one for one!]
Adding the word "another" to the text box here certainly improves the above complaint, but comparing this to Swift Spinner suggests this should probably cost at least 3G.
Maybe a good fix to reduce the efficiency is:
DeleteWebspitting Spider 1G
Creature - Spider Warrior
Flash
When ~ enters the battlefield, target creature loses flying until end of turn.
It still trades with smaller flyers and creatures, but also allows versatility. One of your bigger guys could eat a small flyer, you could double block a problem flyer, etc.
More of an archer than a spider now though
DeleteThis is too efficient for common. Good call. I'd either make it uncommon, or remove the +0/+2.
DeleteI like Axxle's suggestion of etb making something lose flying.
DeleteAxxle's effectively removes the +0/+2, allows double-blocking of a flier, and disallows blocking multiple fliers via Palace Guard. I can dig it.
DeleteI'd like to see
ReplyDeleteDrachnid Recluse {1}{G}
Creature - Spider Warrior
Flash
When ~ enters the battlefield, you may tap it. If you do, target creature gets +0/+2 and reach until end of turn.
2/1
You can ambush with the body or ambush with the trick and keep the body - it's a weak enough trick but it can make a difference, especially at this rate. We sacrifice Ambush Viper's deathtouch for versatility - but I suspect Ambush Viper may not pass for common in every modern block.
Slightly complex at common, but I like the idea.
DeleteI like this. I agree it was doing slightly too much at common.
