Cool Card Design of the Day
3/2/2017 - Inspired by MaRo's review of dual lands, in particular the ability to choose to use your land immediately or let it enter the battlefield tapped… How about a dual land that ETBT, unless you need the mana immediately (and colorless will do)?
That's sort of useful, but I hate that this land will often sit around with a dumb counter on it forever.
This version will most always end up free of counters, and the counters it does have represent something of value. In addition, making it more Gemstone Mine means we don't need to print a whole cycle of these awkward lands.
Finally, a much simpler idea, chasing the same basic goal:
Yoyo Bog is like the "fixed depletion lands" (Cloudcrest Lake et al), but with the down-side that it puts you back a turn when you've got more lands in hand, and the up-side that you can replay it at no cost when you don't, or even get two mana out of it in a single turn.
I'm a fan of the yoyo design, but probably not at common. That could easily be a rare land cycle given its ability to generate two mana in a turn. At least uncommon.
ReplyDeleteYeah. I'm not worried about the complexity, but we don't want dozens of yoyo lands flooding Limited. Would be excessive.
DeleteMy reactions to Yoyo Land:
Delete1st: "Hey, this combos great with landfall!"
2nd: "Good protection against Wasteland, too.
3rd: "So, if I tap 4 of these to cast Armageddon..."
Armageddon's legal in what, Legacy, Vintage, and Commander? I think I'm okay with that.
DeleteThis might say something about my skill level, but I don't think Fast or Colorful Land would reliably end up free of counters for me. I picture myself playing it tapped on a turn where I don't need the mana, and then putting off using the last ability as much as possible, just in case I'll need it later.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I had the same thought. It was certainly very rare for Vivid lands to end up with no counters.
DeleteThat will certainly happen.
DeleteSame kind of challenge as mulliganing.
Jay what about the Tesla lands?

Those are strictly better than Fast or Colorful Bog. They're very very good. Are they too good? I'm not sure, but they are probably the best lands since Ravnica's shock lands.
