Cool Card Design of the Day
3/21/2017 - The harpy challenge earlier this month got me thinking about harpy tribal, for some reason. When I think of harpies, I imagine them in a small flock, attracted to dying victims.
If you'd like to share other ways harpy tribal might work, share a common or two below.
I love the flock flavor. Is there any way of balancing it for it to trigger off a different creature dying? Dying itself doesn't seem quite right
ReplyDeleteWas thinking harpies on this world were loyal and vengeful.
DeleteBut you could certainly remake Falkenrath Noble or Scavenger Drake.
Flock-Follower 1B
ReplyDeleteCreature - Harpy
Flying
If ~ would deal damage, instead target player loses 1 life for each creature you control that attacked this turn.
1/1
Subtle, but definitely synergistic!
DeleteWhy does it Rhox though, and why is it so bad at blocking?
How about:
Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, that player loses 1 life for each other creature that attacked this turn.
Or even:
Whenever ~ attacks, it gets +1/+0 until EOT for each other attacking creature.
This Rhoxes as a way to show fragility/trickiness/cowardice, like a combat skulking, and is bad at blocking as just a way to balance the fact that it's Signal Pest in black. ("Can't block" and "pretty awful at blocking" I think being comparable).
DeleteIf I could make this an 0/2 for B and not have it be convoluted in the rules I'd definitely try it.
Loyal and Vengeful?
ReplyDeleteWronged Harpy 2B
Creature Harpy (C)
Flying
When Wronged Harpy dies, return it to your hand at the beginning of the next end step if you control a Harpy.
2/1
That's sweet, but dealing with two at once is likely too tricky for this to be common.
DeleteMore loyal then vengeful.
Carrion-Kin Harpy

Creature - Harpy - Uncommon
Flying
Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, put a +1/+1 counter on up to two Harpy creatures you control.
2/2
Recombining Jay's original ideas.
Nice uncommon!
DeleteCarrion's Call XBB
ReplyDeleteInstant
Put a 1/1 black harpy creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
Morbid- if a creature died this turn, put X 1/1 black harpy creature tokens with flying onto the battlefield.
Nothing really says flock like a thick pile of flying tokens.
The X doing nothing without morbid is bothering me. I should have put the X in the morbid line.
DeleteAgreed.
DeleteMaybe even eliminate it:
Carrion's Call BB
Instant
Create a 1/1 black harpy creature token with flying for each creature that died this turn.
Gangrenous Calf B
DeleteCreature- Beast
XB, sacrifice Gangrenous Calf: put X 1/1 black harpy creature tokens with flying onto the battlefield tapped.
0/1
Much more NWO and looks better. Flavor too.
That works too!
