Weekend Art Challenge 031617—Anna Lakisova

Click through to see the illustration and design requirements for your single  card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, which you may use to revise your submission any number of times. I will aim to review the most recent submission from each designer.

Design a green instant for this art. Common or uncommon.

  1. Escape into the Underbrush G
    Instant (U)
Put two +1/+1 counters on target creature. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to and dealt by that creature this turn.

    1. Green doesn't normally do Fog Bank but since it's a subset of Fog, it's justifiable with flavor and/or gameplay. Escape is decent enough on each. I do suspect this color-shifted Journey to Nowhere needs to cost more.

    1GG
    Instant - Uncommon
Target creature an opponent controls attacks alone this turn if able.

    1. Nice. "Attacks if able" is much more red, and controlling attack steps is R/W, but "your team can't attack" is a lot like Fog… Could this be "Target creature an opponent controls blocks alone this turn if able"?

    2. I actually think that is even more red, given that its use case is usually similar to Falter...

    Instant - U
Remove target blocking creature from combat.

    Draw a card

    1. I'd want reminder text that the attacker's damage is still absorbed unless it has trample, and I wonder if this shouldn't be red, but I suppose it's unique enough from "can't block" to work in green.

I'll bet this is a card players will dismiss until they see it win a game.

    1. I appreciate the aesthetics, but this could cost {1}{G} and still be a 2.0

Ignoring dev balance, yeah, this is a real clean card. Can dig it.

    2. It could easily be +1/+4 or +2/+4 with the same flavor.

    3. Even +4/+4 if you add some condition, like blocking, or smaller-than-combatants.

    4. Oh yes, but I'd rather reduce the cost and keep toughness greater than power, it seems to fit the flavor better to turn the tables in a way other than just being stronger

  5. Helena's Gambit 1G
    Instant
Creatures you control may deal combat damage as though they weren't blocked until the end of turn.

    1. Sweet uncommon!
This might actually be too strong, but there's surely some price where it's fair, and there it should absolutely see print.

    2. This card already exists as a sorcery. Predatory focus in Guildpact

    3. Good call, P.
      3GG is the price, then.

I should've caught that Helena's Gambit is an instant. While that is functionally different (when it's not lethal) because the defender will block thinking their creatures will take damage, it's worse gameplay. Predatory Focus is best as a sorcery.

  6. Daunting Jaunt RG
    Instant (u)
Target creature you control gets +2/+2 until end of turn. It fights target creature an opponent controls unless that player taps all creatures he or she controls.

    1. So you can do this before your opponent attacks to negate their attack… or failing that, kill one of their attackers and block a little better. Or you can do it before your attack, in which case you get through unimpeded for +2, or you kill a blocker and make one attacker more dangerous.

For a RG uncommon, that sounds about right. Cool.

  7. Reverse Pursuit 2G
    Instant (uncommon)
Until end of turn, whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, draw a card.

    1. Spent a while searching Gatherer for the blue version of this that already exists, until I finally remembered it doesn't, yet.

Anyhow, yeah, this should totally be a green card.
