CCDD 041515—Scholar of Aether, Silent Mist, Suspension of Disbelief
Cool Card Design of the Day 4/15/2015 - These cards aren't better than those submitted for the last Weekend Art Challenge, they just show a few more possibilities for interacting with bounce effects.
The last one is not printable rules-wise. What a card would do is something they have messed with once to my knowledge (Equinox) and the rules managers all hate it.
Agreed. It's one of the biggest reasons to be sad they didn't make more sorcery subtypes right from the beginning, so that we can group cards with similar flavor/effects and key off of them.
Silent Mist seems pretty problematic as is. Having a strict cap on how many permanents I can have on the battlefield, including lands, is quite oppressive. I think it would be better if it didn't trigger on land drops.
Does Scholar of Aether generate colorless mana? If not, how does it interact with hybrid?
Silent Mist doesn't appeal to me as a player. I agree, it seems too oppressive. Letting it ignore land drops not only eases that burden, but also creates an organic way to interact with/through it. I like that version Much More (both as a designer and as a player).
Scholar of Aether does generate colorless mana. If you would add mana to your mana pool with a hybrid mana symbol, you choose which color to add. Those rules already exist, but since they've never been used, reminder text would be helpful.
Blue isn't supposed to generate colored mana, but Scholar of AEther looks appealing to Johnny/Jenny. I'd say put it in {G}{U} and rely on Invasive Species to make cohesive decks. That said, as it is it doesn't do a very good job of hosing opposing bounce on during combat/end step/upkeep/other turns or work very well with Roaring Primadox. I could see letting players find the combo with Flash creatures themselves, but it's also not out of the question to stick some sort of Scout's Warning on here.
Silent Mist tweaks sound wise. Alternate wording based on Brutal Suppression: Spells cost an additional "Return a permanent you control to its owner's hand" to cast.
Scholar of AEther is dangerous. Infinite mana with Grinning Ignus, or Cloudstone Curio plus any number of creatures, or any sort of way to reduce creature costs and Archeomancer. Whether or not that means it's printable, I don't know. But it's certainly dangerous.
I think Elemental Resonance shows it does. (It has a ruling "If the enchanted permanent's mana cost is {2}{W}{U}, this Aura's controller adds {2}{W}{U} to his or her mana pool.") Generic mana appears to turn into colourless mana by... some magic somehow.

I really like Suspension of Disbelief.

Not a fan of how asymmetrical Silent Mist is if you have substantially more than 6 mana in play.

ReplyDeleteAlso infinite ETB triggers with any creature that can bounce itself (Cavern Harpy comes to mind).
DeleteThe first Suspension of Disbelief looks very fun.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure Scholar of Aether works rules-wise, because of the generic-versus-colorless-mana problem.

DeleteWow, I didn't know Elemental Resonance existed. Wacky!
