Greetings, artisans! Click through to see this weekend's art and the design requirements for your single card submission, due Monday morning. Every submission warrants feedback, and everyone is encouraged to give feedback. You may use that feedback to revise your submission any number of times, though only the version rendered will be included in the review, if someone volunteers to render the cards.
Design an uncommon creature for this art.

Ooh, that looks like evil he-man. But I'm not sure I can turn that into a card :)
ReplyDeleteThe "Preview" button on this site is broken. :/
ReplyDeleteWarning, the art is quite a bit bigger than what the imagebox on a standard MTG card will accommodate. I positioned it with the top of the goblin's head at the top (cutting off the feather/hair and the tip of the sword), and with the bottom of the wolf's teeth at the bottom.

Creature - Goblin (U)
Menace
Creatures with power less than CARDNAME's power can't block it.

Creature - Goblin Knight (unc)
1/1
Double strike
Whenever you cast a red spell, you may pay {1}. If you do, ~ gets +1/+0 UEOT.
I originally had this as a 3/3, then a 2/2. But looking at the precedents, for this to be uncommon as required, it looks like 1/1 is better.
I think 3/3s with double strike are generally rare these days (Wrecking Ogre, Dragon-Style Twins). 2/2s sometimes are as well, if they can share double strike (Arashin Foremost, Silverblade Paladin, Bonescythe Sliver) or get bigger (Fabled Hero, Hound of Griselbrand). It looks like for a double striker to be uncommon, it needs to have power 2 with no natural way of getting bigger; *or* power 1 with a natural way to make double strike deal more than 1 extra damage (Ghostblade Eidolon, Aven Striker).
Now this is down to 1/1, does it need the cost of {1}?
Why not prowess?
DeleteI think one or both of the conditionals could be slashed from this trigger.
DeleteMike: Prowess would have a bit of a different feel, I think. This guy looks, well, vicious. Also that'd just be an uncommon version of Dragon-Style Twins. Which is a good thing to do at some point, certainly.
DeleteJenesis: One or both? Oh, "red"? Hm. "Whenever you cast a spell, ~ pumps" I think is too close to prowess. I could see any spell with the {1}. But I think I prefer red spell without the {1}.
So yes, let's remove the payment, take the trigger down to "Whenever you cast a red spell, ~ gets +1/+0 UEOT." Unlike prowess, that rewards you for casting your creatures precombat, which is possibly interesting.
The armor in this illustration is the most striking feature to me...
ReplyDeleteMenacing Licid. 1R
Creature- Licid
R, T: Flip CARDNAME and attach it to target creature.

Crimson Carapace
Enchantment- aura
Enchant creature.
Enchanted creature has menace.
R: flip CARDNAME.
Oh, 1/1 I suppose
Delete1/1 with menace?
DeleteNone of the Licids have the keywords they grant, but that did cross my mind.
Delete2/1 for 1R. Or. 1/1 for R?
Given that Licid technology is pretty clearly frowned upon and we have Bestow, why not go that route? If it doesn't look enchantmenty enough, maybe an artifact analogue to bestow?
DeleteStalagmite Hunter 3R
ReplyDeleteCreature - Wolf (u)
Whenever another creature enters the battlefield, any player may sacrifice a mountain. If they do, ~ fights that creature.
4/2
So... this hoses 0/X and 1/X creatures, except that opponents playing Red also have a way to take it out? That's cool, but it's also a little more involved than I prefer at uncommon. What about saying "you" instead of "any player"?
DeleteVicious Wolf-Rider {2}{B}{R}

Deathtouch, menace
Other black creatures you control have deathtouch.
Other red creatures you control have menace.

Creature - Goblin Warrior
First Strike
Whenever CARDNAME deals combat damage to a player, they choose one:
- you may cast an instant card from your hand without paying it's mana cost
- put a +1/+1 counter on CARDNAME
I wanted to reference "warg rider" but it didn't quite fit.
Wolf Basher
ReplyDeleteCreature - Wolf
R: CARDNAME gains first strike until end of turn.
When CARDNAME dies, put a 1/1 red goblin creature token onto the battlefield.
2/1
Mana cost? Is the wolf G or R?
DeleteTraditionally, the card represents the rider and the token represents the mount. It's not "wrong", it's just unexpected. It would make sense for a goblin to be at the mercy of his mount
DeleteI can see this for 2R as is or 1RR for a 2/2
DeleteOoh, yeah it's supposed to be a green wolf 1G
DeleteGoblin Denwarden 2R
ReplyDeleteCreature - Goblin Warrior (U)
Defender, double strike
When another creature with defender enters the battlefield under your control, put a +1/+1 counter on CARDNAME and CARDNAME loses defender (this effect does not end at the end of turn).

"Guard duty is smegging awesome! Why don't you try it for a bit..."
DeleteFirst time trying this:
ReplyDeleteArmored Warg 2R
Creature - Wolf Mount (U)
Ride 2R (2R, T: Choose a non-mount creature you control that is not riding to be riding this creature.)
When a creature rides Armored Warg, attach any, attach all Equipment you control to it.
The riding creature gets +1/+1 and first strike as long as it’s equipped.
2/2
Ideally in the same set as Living Weapons, in an army/heroes(death stars) set.
If no one else pipes up, I'm going to do the renders.
ReplyDeleteRageblood Rider 2R
ReplyDeleteCreature - Goblin Knight (U)
Corrupt (Whenever this deals damage to a creature without a -1/-1 counter, 1 of that damage is dealt in the form of a -1/-1 counter.)
Creatures you don't control with a -1/-1 counter must attack each combat if able.
